Chapter 4 - Fire and Steel in Milan

The rain beat mercilessly against the flat concrete of Villa Moretti’s rooftop helipad. The wind whistled through the night sky, carrying the low, rhythmic thrumming of an approaching black helicopter hovering two hundred feet above the estate.

Vivian stood near the edge of the helipad, her hair soaked with rain, wildly waving a signal flare to guide the aircraft down.

The heavy steel access door swung open, and Alessandro and I stepped out into the storm.

"Vivian!" Alessandro’s voice boomed above the sound of the helicopter blades. "It’s over! The helipad security turrets are locked onto that aircraft. If it drops ten feet lower, my automated systems will blow it out of the sky!"

Vivian froze, turning around slowly. The blinding spotlight of the approaching chopper illuminated her desperate, rain-slicked face.

"You won't shoot!" Vivian shrieked over the roar of the engines. "If you destroy this chopper, you destroy the music box! You’ll never clear your father’s name or find the rest of the traitors!"

She pulled a small silver pistol from her jacket, pointing it directly at my chest.

"Step back, Alessandro!" Vivian screamed, her hand shaking violently. "Or I put a bullet through your little maid’s heart right now!"

Alessandro did not step back. Instead, he took two slow, deliberate steps forward, placing himself directly between Vivian’s gun and me. His expression was utterly fearless, his massive frame forming an impenetrable shield in front of my body.

"Shoot me, Vivian," Alessandro offered softly, his voice cutting through the roar of the storm. "If you think you are fast enough. But know this: the second your finger moves, my bullet will tear through your head before yours leaves the barrel."

Vivian trembled, her eyes darting between Alessandro’s cold, unwavering pistol and the helicopter above. "You... you love her," Vivian gasped, a realization dawning on her face that filled her with fresh venom. "You rejected me... a woman of noble blood... for a servant who scrubs your floors!"

"Clara has more honor, courage, and dignity in her little finger than you or your entire lineage ever possessed," Alessandro spat, his tone filled with absolute conviction. "She isn't a servant in this house, Vivian. She is the woman who brought life back into these walls."

My heart pounded violently against my ribs—not from fear of the gun, but from the raw, breathtaking truth of Alessandro’s words. I looked at the dark back of his head, feeling a surge of emotion so powerful it threatened to consume me.

Desperate and cornered, Vivian suddenly spun around, raising her pistol toward the sky and firing three shots into the air—a signal for her sniper inside the helicopter to open fire.

CRACK! CRACK!

High-caliber sniper rounds shattered the concrete near our feet. Alessandro grabbed me, throwing us both to the deck behind a heavy air filtration unit as bullets rained down.

"Jonah!" Alessandro roared into his radio comms. "Take out that chopper!"

From the high watchtowers surrounding the estate, two heavy anti-materiel rifles fired simultaneously. The helicopter’s tail rotor exploded into bright orange fire. The pilot lost control, the aircraft spinning wildly out of control before plunging into the forested ravine behind the estate, crashing with a distant, thunderous boom.

Vivian screamed as the shockwave knocked her off her feet. The wooden music box slipped from her hand, sliding across the wet concrete toward the edge of the roof!

"My box!" I cried out, breaking away from Alessandro’s grip.

I scrambled across the slick rooftop, sliding on my knees, reaching out with both hands. My fingers caught the carved wooden edge of the music box just as it was about to drop into the dark three-story abyss below.

"Got it!" I gasped, clutching the box tightly against my chest.

Before I could stand up, Vivian lunged at me from the darkness, tackling me to the roof floor. Her fingers scratched at my face, her eyes wild with madness as she tried to wrench the box from my arms.

"Give it to me, you miserable little bug!" Vivian shrieked, pressing her forearm against my throat, cutting off my air.

I gasped for breath, my vision blurring. But then I thought of Emma asleep downstairs. I thought of the two years of humiliation, the cold nights, the slap across my face in front of twelve families.

"Never," I choked out.

I slammed my head forward, driving my forehead straight into Vivian’s nose.

Vivian cried out in pain, her grip loosening as blood erupted from her face. I rolled over, pinning her arms down, and struck her across the cheek with the flat side of the heavy wooden music box—returning the slap she had given me eightfold.

Vivian fell back onto the wet concrete, unconscious.

Alessandro rushed over, sliding to his knees beside me. He threw his arms around me, pulling me up into his tight embrace. He checked my face, his hands trembling as he swept my wet hair out of my eyes.

"Clara... are you hurt? Look at me!"

May you like

"I'm fine," I breathed, resting my head against his chest, clutching the undamaged music box safely between us. "I have it, Alessandro. We have the key."

Alessandro pulled me tighter, pressing his lips firmly against my forehead, holding me as if he would never let go. "You extraordinary, foolish, perfect woman," he whispered into my hair.
