Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Harland and the Fevered MotherThe staff quarters of the Ferraro estate were located in the far rear wing, down a narrow, poorly lit hallway past the heavy oak doors of the commercial kitchen.

Luca carried Nora through the pristine corridors, his heavy boots making slow, deliberate echoes against the marble. Nora remained quiet as a mouse, her small fingers clutching the lapel of his tailored jacket as if he were the only solid object in a turbulent world.
As they approached the door leading to the staff rooms, a sharp, nasal voice barked from the end of the hall.
"What on earth is going on here?!"
Mr. Harland, the estate’s head butler, stepped out of the pantry holding a silver inventory clipboard. He was a tall, thin man in his fifties with slicked-back gray hair, pinched lips, and an air of supreme arrogance that he carefully disguised when speaking directly to his employer.
Harland froze when he saw Luca. His eyes widened in shock, taking in the sight of his notoriously cold, terrifying master carrying a wet, disheveled three-year-old child.
"Mr. Ferraro!" Harland gasped, quickly recovering his posture and hurrying forward with a bow. "Sir, I... I was not expecting you until late this evening! What is happening? Why are you holding that trash?"
Luca stopped in his tracks. He didn't answer immediately. He slowly turned his dark, penetrating eyes onto the butler.
"What did you just call her, Harland?" Luca asked, his voice smooth, quiet, and deadlier than a drawn blade.
Harland swallowed hard, a sudden bead of sweat appearing near his hairline. "I... I meant the child, sir. That is the maid’s daughter. Maya’s child. I explicitly ordered Maya to keep the brat locked in her living quarters! If she has disturbed you or touched your personal property—"
"She was in the laundry room," Luca said, his gaze never leaving Harland’s face. "Standing barefoot on a wooden stool, trying to wash my silk shirts in cold water."
Harland’s face flushed red with indignation. He glared furiously at Nora, who shrank back, hiding her face entirely in Luca's coat.
"I knew it!" Harland spat, stepping forward aggressively. "That lazy, worthless woman! I told Maya yesterday that if she couldn't keep her child quiet and perform her duties, she would be terminated immediately! Sending her little brat to handle your wardrobe—it's an outrage! I will throw them both off the property this instant, sir! You won't have to deal with this filth another minute!"
Harland reached out a hand to grab Nora’s arm to pull her away from Luca.
He never touched her.
Before Harland’s fingers could graze the child’s sleeve, Luca’s right hand shot out like a iron vise, clamping hard around Harland’s wrist.
Harland let out a sharp yelp of pain as Luca squeezed. The silver clipboard slipped from the butler's fingers, clattering loudly onto the floor.
"If you lay a finger on this child," Luca whispered, his face inches from Harland's, "I will break your hand in three places. Do you understand me?"
"Mr... Mr. Ferraro!" Harland stammered, his eyes bulging with fear as he felt the overwhelming, crushing strength of the man holding him. "I... I was only enforcing order! The house rules—"
"I write the rules in this house," Luca cut him off coldly. He released Harland’s wrist with a sharp shove that sent the butler stumbling backward against the wall. "Where is her mother?"
"Room... Room 4," Harland choked out, rubbing his bruised wrist with a trembling hand. "At the end of the hall..."
Luca ignored him, walking past the cowering butler without another word.
He reached Room 4—a tiny, windowless space originally intended for storage that had been converted into quarters for live-in domestic help. The air inside was stifling, hot, and thick with the scent of sickness.
On a narrow twin bed in the corner lay a woman.
She couldn't have been older than twenty-four. Her face was deathly pale, her dark hair matted with sweat against her forehead, and her lips cracked and dry. She was shivering violently beneath a thin, faded blanket, her chest heaving with shallow, raspy breaths.
"Mama!" Nora cried softly, reaching out her tiny hands from Luca’s arms.
The sound of her daughter's voice seemed to pull the woman from the edge of unconsciousness. Maya’s eyelids fluttered open, dark and glassy with high fever. She struggled to sit up, her thin arms trembling against the mattress.
"Nora..." Maya rasped, her voice choked and dry. "Nora, baby... come here..."
Then her fever-addled eyes focused on the massive figure standing over her bed. She recognized the face instantly—she had seen it in newspapers, on television, and in the quiet, terrifying hushes of the estate staff.
It was Luca Ferraro. The Don of the Ferraro syndicate.
Panic surged through Maya’s veins like liquid ice. She thought of the strict rules Harland had given her: Never speak to Mr. Ferraro. Never let him see your child. If you fail, he will destroy you.
"Mr... Mr. Ferraro..." Maya choked out, scrambling backward until her spine hit the headboard, pulling the thin blanket up to her chin. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry! Please... don't hurt my daughter! She didn't mean to break any rules! I... I fell asleep... I couldn't stand up..."
She began to sob, a harsh, painful sound that rattled in her chest.
"Please," Maya begged, her eyes wide with desperate terror as tears streamed down her burning face. "Fire me! Throw me out! Just... don't take Nora! She's all I have!"
Luca looked at the feverish, terrified mother in front of him. He saw no deceit, no scheme, no attempt to manipulate him. He saw only a woman who was dying on her feet to protect her child.
Luca carefully sat down on the edge of the small bed. The springs squeaked beneath his weight. He gently set Nora down beside her mother.
Nora immediately crawled under the blanket, wrapping her small arms around her mother’s waist. Maya clutched her child frantically, kissing the top of Nora’s head over and over, her tears soaking into Nora’s dark curls.
"Harland told you that if you missed work today, you would be thrown out?" Luca asked softly.
Maya nodded weakly, unable to look him in the eye. "He... he said Mr. Ferraro has no patience for weak people. He said... if your clothes weren't pressed by four, he'd call security to drag us to the gate..."
Luca slowly reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his phone. He pressed a speed-dial key.
"Dr. Giuliano," Luca said when the line connected. "Get to the estate immediately. Bring a full medical kit, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and IV fluids. Main house, east wing."
He paused, listening to the doctor's quick response.
"Ten minutes," Luca commanded, then ended the call.
He stood up from the bed and looked down at Maya, whose eyes were wide with shock and confusion.
"You have pneumonia," Luca said plainly. "You are not working today. Or tomorrow. Or for the rest of this month."
"Mr. Ferraro... I can't afford—"
"You are not fired," Luca interrupted. "And you will not be staying in this cellar another hour."
He turned toward the door, where Harland was hovering in the hallway, looking nervous and sweating through his collar.
"Harland," Luca called out.
The butler practically leaped into the doorway. "Yes, sir?"
"Pack your bags," Luca said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "You have thirty minutes to leave my estate. If I see your face on my property after four o'clock, my security team will handle you."
Harland’s jaw dropped. "What?! Sir! You are firing me?! For a maid and a street child?!"
Luca took one step toward him, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying fire. "I am firing you for abusing a sick mother and forcing a three-year-old child to scrub my floors. You are a coward, Harland. And I do not keep cowards in my home. Get out."
Harland went deathly pale, turned on his heel, and practically ran down the corridor.

Luca turned back to Maya and Nora. He reached down and gently scooped the shivering woman up into his arms, blanket and all, as easily as if she weighed nothing.
"Nora," Luca said, looking over his shoulder at the little girl who was staring at him in awe. "Grab your mother's shoes. We are moving to the guest suite."
