Chapter 6 - A Fortress Built on LoveOne year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the coastal cliffs of Palermo, casting a warm golden glow across the gardens of the Ferraro estate.
The heavy steel defense shutters were open, letting in the sweet fragrance of blooming jasmine and salty sea air. The dark, terrifying atmosphere that had once hung over the forty-room mansion had completely vanished, replaced by the ringing sound of childhood laughter echoing through the wide hallways.
In the central courtyard, a grand outdoor celebration was underway.
Under a white silk canopy decorated with thousands of white roses, guests from across the city—diplomats, community leaders, and converted syndicate captains—sat at long banquet tables lined with fine crystal and delicious Italian food.
Maya stood by the stone fountain, looking breathtaking in an elegant, flowing cream lace dress. Her dark hair was styled in loose waves, her skin glowing with health and radiance. Beside her stood Luca, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his arm resting protectively around her waist, his eyes rarely leaving her face.
And running through the grass in a tiny white dress with a pink sash was four-year-old Nora.
She was no longer the frail, quiet child with raw, blood-stained knuckles who had stood on a wooden stool in a cold basement laundry room. Her cheeks were rosy and full, her dark curls bouncing as she chased a golden retriever puppy that Luca had bought her for her fourth birthday.
"Nora!" Maya called out with a gentle laugh. "Don't ruin your shoes before the cake!"
Nora stopped, turning around and giggling as she ran back toward them, skidding to a halt on the smooth grass and throwing her arms around Luca’s legs.
"Daddy!" she squeaked happily. "Look! Barnaby found a blue butterfly!"
Luca leaned down, scooping his daughter up into his arms effortlessly. He kissed her cheek, making her squeal with delight.
"Did he?" Luca smiled, adjusting her pink sash. "Did you show your mother?"
"She was too busy looking at you," Nora teased, pointing a tiny finger at Maya, who blushed softly.
Marco walked over, holding a glass of champagne and smiling warmly at the family. "Everything is set for the evening, Don Luca. The foundation papers have been officially signed. The Maya & Nora Ferraro Children's Hospital in Naples breaks ground next month."
"Thank you, Marco," Luca said, clinking his glass against his second-in-command's.
When Marco walked away to join the guests, Maya leaned her head against Luca’s shoulder, watching her daughter play with the puppy nearby.
"Sometimes I still think I'm going to wake up in that small room under the stairs," Maya whispered softly, her fingers lacing through Luca’s large hand. "I still can't believe how much my life changed because a little girl tried to wash your shirt."
Luca looked down at his wife, his dark eyes filled with a deep, infinite love that no mob war or financial empire could ever replace.
"She didn't just wash a shirt, Maya," Luca murmured, bringing her hand to his lips and pressing a tender kiss against her knuckles. "She saved my life."

He pulled Maya close, wrapping his arm around her, watching Nora run through the sunlit gardens under the watchful, loving eyes of a father who would tear down the world to keep her safe.
The laundry room below was quiet now, its cold concrete floors forgotten. In its place stood a fortress built on blood, redeemed by honor, and forever warmed by love.
