Chapter 3 - The Ghost from NaplesThe master guest suite on the second floor of the Ferraro mansion was larger than most luxury apartments. It featured floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty olive groves, a plush king-sized bed draped in Egyptian cotton, and a private stone fireplace that now crackled with warm cedar wood.

Dr. Giuliano—the Ferraro family’s private physician—had arrived within twelve minutes. He had administered intravenous fluids, high-dose antibiotics, and a fever-reducing medication to Maya, who was now sleeping peacefully under a warm duvet.

In the adjoining sitting room, Luca sat at a heavy mahogany desk, staring at a leather-bound dossier that had just been delivered by his second-in-command, Marco Vance.

Nora was curled up on a plush velvet sofa across from him, dressed in a soft cotton sweater three sizes too big for her that one of the female security staff had pulled from the estate’s spare emergency supplies. She held a cup of warm milk with both hands, her small feet kicking rhythmic patterns against the sofa cushions. She kept darting shy, curious glances at Luca.

Marco, a sharp-featured man in a dark suit with a visible shoulder holster, leaned over Luca’s desk, dropping a set of printed documents onto the blotter.

"Her name is Maya Vance—no relation to me," Marco said softly, glancing over at the sleeping child on the couch. "Twenty-four years old. She applied for the housekeeping position six months ago through an agency in Rome. Clean background check, fake ID, forged employment references."

Luca raised an eyebrow, his fingers tracing the edge of the document. "Fake?"

"Excellently crafted fakes," Marco confirmed, lowering his voice. "Whoever made them knew how to bypass standard corporate background checks. But when I ran her biometric fingerprints through our internal syndicate database... something very interesting popped up."

Luca looked up, his dark eyes sharpening. "Go on."

"She’s not a professional maid, Boss," Marco revealed. "Her real name is Maya Moretti. She is the widow of Julian Moretti."

Luca froze.

The Moretti family had once been one of the five major ruling families of the Sicilian underworld—until three years ago, when an internal bloody purge shattered their ranks. Julian Moretti, the youngest son of the family, had been a soft-spoken accountant who wanted nothing to do with his family's brutal criminal empire. He had married a quiet, middle-class university student named Maya.

When the purge occurred, Julian was executed by his own uncle, Enzo Moretti, who seized control of the family assets. Maya, pregnant and terrified, had vanished into thin air overnight.

"Enzo Moretti has had a fifty-thousand-dollar bounty on her head for three years," Marco continued, his tone dark. "Not because she knows syndicate secrets, but because Julian held three secret offshore trust accounts containing forty million dollars—accounts that automatically transfer to his daughter, Nora, on her fourth birthday next month. If Maya or Nora die before then, the trust defaults back to the Moretti family patriarch. Enzo."

Luca slowly closed the dossier.

The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with violent clarity.

Maya hadn't just been running from poverty. She had been hiding from a ruthless mob syndicate that was actively hunting her and her child. She had taken the lowest, most invisible job she could find—working as an anonymous maid in the estate of Luca Ferraro, the one man whose territory Enzo Moretti would never dare step into.

She had hidden in the lion's den because she knew wolves wouldn't dare hunt there.

Luca looked across the room at Nora.

The little girl had finished her milk and was staring at a blue plastic ink pen sitting on his desk. She slipped off the sofa, walked over on her small bare feet, and stood beside his chair.

"Mr. Luca?" she whispered, touching his knee lightly.

"Yes, Nora?"

"Did I fix the shirt?" she asked, her big gray eyes filled with earnest concern. "Is Mama safe now?"

Luca felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth expand in his chest—a feeling he had buried deep beneath layers of steel and blood twenty years ago.

He reached down, lifting Nora onto his lap. She didn't flinch this time. She leaned back against his chest, resting her small head against his shoulder.

"The shirt is fine, Nora," Luca said gently. "And your mother is completely safe."

"Promise?" she asked, holding up a tiny pinky finger.

Luca looked at her tiny hand. He slowly extended his own large, scarred pinky finger, hooking it around hers.

"I promise," the mafia don said softly.

Just then, Marco’s satellite phone buzzed in his coat pocket. Marco answered it, listened for five seconds, and his face turned to stone.

He ended the call and looked at Luca.

"Boss," Marco said quietly. "Harland just made a phone call from a gas station two miles down the road."

May you like

"To whom?" Luca asked.

"To Enzo Moretti," Marco replied, his voice laced with venom. "Harland sold him the location of Maya and the child for twenty thousand dollars. A Moretti hit squad of eight armed men just entered our outer perimeter district."
