Chapter 3 - The Ledger of BloodThe penthouse was a masterpiece of cold marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and priceless art.

While Lorenzo went into his private study to handle the fallout from the club incident, Valerie was shown to a luxurious guest suite overlooking the glowing expanse of Central Park.
She spent an hour soaking in a deep garden tub, washing away the smell of the nightclub and the terrifying memory of Julian Vance’s grip on her arm. She changed into a soft, oversized silk robe left for her in the dressing room—clearly tailored for a woman of her generous proportions, a subtle detail that told her Lorenzo had planned for her presence long before tonight.
Unable to sleep, Valerie wandered down the dimly lit hallway toward the main living area.
As she passed Lorenzo’s study, the door stood slightly ajar. A warm shaft of light spilled onto the hardwood floor, accompanied by the low, tense voices of Lorenzo and Mateo.
"Vance is calling a meeting of the Five Families for tomorrow afternoon," Mateo was saying, his voice laced with anxiety. "He’s claiming you broke the treaty by assaulting his heir without cause. He wants reparations, Lorenzo. He wants control of the New Jersey shipping docks."
"Julian Vance laid hands on my woman," Lorenzo’s voice was like grinding stone. "He threatened her life in my house. The treaty was broken the second he touched her."
"The other bosses don't know she’s your woman!" Mateo countered, his tone rising slightly. "To them, she’s an outside auditor—an informant! Vance is spreading rumors that she’s working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to bring down the shipping cartel. If the commission believes him, they won't just sanction you, Lorenzo. They’ll put a contract out on Valerie Hayes."
Valerie froze in the hallway, her breath catching in her throat.
A contract.
They were talking about killing her.
Inside the room, a heavy silence fell. Then came the sound of a glass being set down hard on a desk.
"If anyone so much as looks at her with intent to harm," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, cold fury, "I will burn this city to the ground. I will eliminate every Vance alive before the sun sets tomorrow."
"You can't fight all five families at once, Lorenzo!" Mateo pleaded. "Even with our firepower, it’s suicide! Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless she gives us something we can use at the commission meeting," Mateo suggested cautiously. "She’s been in the books for three months. Does she have proof that Vance has been skimming from the shared cartel accounts?"
Valerie didn't hesitate.
She pushed the heavy mahogany door open, stepping into the warm light of the study.
Both men turned instantly. Mateo’s hand went to his shoulder holster, while Lorenzo immediately stood up from his leather chair, his eyes softening as he took in the sight of Valerie wrapped in the black silk robe, her dark curls tumbling over her shoulders.
"Valerie," Lorenzo said softly, stepping around his massive oak desk. "You should be resting."
"I heard," Valerie said flatly, her voice firm, her hands planted firmly on her hips. "You're facing a mob war because of me."
"I am facing a mob war because Julian Vance is a dog," Lorenzo corrected coldly. "You have nothing to apologize for."
"I wasn't going to apologize," Valerie stated, walking directly up to his desk. She picked up a clean notepad and a gold pen lying beside his laptop. "Mateo is right. Julian Vance didn't target me at the club by accident tonight, Lorenzo."
Lorenzo frowned, his dark brows drawing together. "What do you mean?"
"I was finishing my final report on the logistics accounts this afternoon," Valerie explained, her analytical mind taking complete control of her fear. "I found a secondary discrepancy in the fuel tax ledgers. Forty million dollars was diverted over the last two years through a shell corporation called Aegis Maritime."
Mateo gasped. "Aegis Maritime is Vance’s primary shell company!"
"Precisely," Valerie said, her pen flying across the paper as she sketched out a complex financial flow chart with terrifying precision. "Vance wasn't just skimming from Costa International. He was stealing directly from the shared pension and operations fund owned collectively by all Five Families. He knew I was getting close to discovering it. That’s why Julian was at the club tonight. He wasn't trying to hit on me, Lorenzo. He was trying to intimidate me into handing over my flash drive before I filed my final audit with your board."
Lorenzo stared at the handwritten flow chart on his desk, then looked up at Valerie with a mixture of awe and fierce pride.
"You have the documentation?" Lorenzo asked quietly.
Valerie reached into the pocket of her silk robe and pulled out a small, sleek silver flash drive. She held it out to him, her eyes burning with determination.
"Everything is here," she said. "Transaction numbers, bank routing codes, encrypted communications between Vance’s CFO and the off-shore banks in Zurich. This doesn't just clear my name—it proves Vance has been betraying every boss sitting at that commission table."
Lorenzo looked at the flash drive in her soft palm, then raised his hand, wrapping his large fingers gently around hers.
"You just saved my empire, Valerie," he murmured, his thumb rubbing the back of her hand.
"I didn't do it to save your empire, Lorenzo," Valerie whispered, holding his gaze, her heart beating rapidly at his proximity. "I did it because I don't let bad men ruin my hard work. And because..."
She paused, her face flushing warmly.
"Because?" Lorenzo prompted softly, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.
"Because you covered me with your jacket," she admitted quietly. "No one has ever protected me like that before."
May you like
Lorenzo dropped the flash drive onto his desk and cupped both sides of her face with his hands. He bent his head, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead, right above her brow.
"I will protect you for the rest of my life, Valerie," he swore against her skin. "Tomorrow, we walk into the commission meeting together. And you are going to show those old men what happens when they mess with the woman who rules Manhattan."
