Chapter 4 - The Commission of ShadowsThe meeting of the Five Families took place in the subterranean boardroom of a historic hotel near Wall Street—a room with no windows, thick concrete walls, and a single oak table surrounded by twelve leather chairs.

Armed enforcers stood every ten feet along the walls, their hands resting near hidden holsters.

When the heavy iron doors opened, a collective murmur echoed through the room.

Lorenzo Costa walked in first, dressed in a flawless three-piece charcoal suit, looking every bit the ruthless mob king he was. But it wasn't Lorenzo that made the hardened bosses gasp.

Walking beside him, her head held high, was Valerie Hayes.

She wore a custom-tailored burgundy suit that hugged her generous curves with unapologetic elegance. Her hair was styled in rich, dark waves around her shoulders, her dark red lipstick matching the sharp confidence in her brown eyes. She carried a leather portfolio under her arm like a shield.

Sitting at the far end of the table was Don Antonio Vance—Julian’s uncle—a frail-looking man with cold, snake-like eyes and a white hair line. Julian sat beside him, his nose heavily bandaged, his face black and blue from last night’s encounter.

"What is the meaning of this, Costa?" Don Antonio spat, slamming a bony fist onto the table. "You bring an outsider—a civilian audit girl—into the sacred hall of the Commission? You insult us!"

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He walked to the head of the table, pulled out a high-backed leather chair, and waited for Valerie to sit down before he remained standing behind her, his large hands resting possessively on the back of her chair.

"This 'audit girl' holds your destiny in her hands, Vance," Lorenzo said, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "You called this emergency meeting to demand my New Jersey docks as compensation for your nephew’s broken face. You claimed I acted without cause."

"You did!" Julian yelled, his slurred voice filled with venom. "She’s a nobody! A glorified clerk who belongs in the gutter!"

Lorenzo’s hand tightened on the back of Valerie’s chair, his dark eyes flashing with a promise of death that made Julian instantly shut his mouth.

"Speak, Valerie," Lorenzo commanded softly, bending down near her ear. "Show them."

Valerie took a slow, deep breath. She opened her leather portfolio, pulled out five thick bound folders, and slid them across the polished mahogany table to the bosses of the other three families.

"Gentlemen," Valerie began, her voice crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of fear. "My name is Valerie Hayes. I am a senior forensic auditor. For ninety days, I have been analyzing the shared maritime logistics operations of Costa International."

The bosses looked at her, some amused, others annoyed, but as they opened the folders, their expressions rapidly changed.

"If you turn to page fourteen," Valerie continued, pointing to the financial diagrams, "you will see a systematic drain of capital from the joint security fund established in 2022. Over forty million dollars has been redirected to an offshore entity named Aegis Maritime."

Don Antonio Vance’s face drained of color. "This is absurd! Fabricated lies from a woman trying to save her own skin!"

"The wire transfer confirmations bear your personal digital signature, Don Antonio," Valerie countered smoothly, her brown eyes locking onto the old man’s terrified gaze. "Along with secondary authorizations signed by your nephew, Julian, using accounts registered at Credit Suisse in Zurich. I verified the IP addresses of the origin terminal—they trace directly to your private estate in Long Island."

One of the senior bosses—an elderly man named Don Carmine from the Brooklyn syndicate—slammed his folder shut and looked at Vance with terrifying fury.

"You've been stealing from our families, Antonio?" Carmine rasped, his hand reaching for his coat. "While our boys take the heat on the streets, you've been skimming forty million for yourself?"

"It's a lie!" Antonio shouted, standing up so fast his chair fell backward. "She’s working with the feds! She’s trying to destroy us from the inside!"

"She works for me," Lorenzo stepped forward, his voice dropping an octave into pure malice. "And every line of data in those folders has been independently verified by my security team. You violated the commission pact, Vance. You stole from the families, and then your pathetic nephew tried to assault the woman who discovered it to cover your tracks."

The room erupted into furious shouting. The enforcers along the walls shifted uncomfortably, their eyes darting between their respective bosses.

Don Carmine raised his hand, restoring a tense, terrifying silence. He looked at Valerie with deep respect.

"You have a fine mind, young lady," Carmine said softly. "A very sharp mind. You saved this commission millions today."

He turned his gaze to Antonio Vance.

"Antonio Vance, your seat on this commission is revoked," Carmine declared coldly. "Your assets are frozen, and your territory in New Jersey is hereby forfeited to Costa International."

"No!" Julian screamed, standing up beside his uncle. "You can't do this because of some fat audit bitch—"

Before Julian could finish the insult, Lorenzo moved.

In a split second, Lorenzo drawn a sleek black pistol from his jacket, leaned across the table, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against the center of Julian Vance’s forehead.

The click of the safety being disengaged sounded like a crack of thunder in the quiet room.

"Say one more word about her," Lorenzo whispered, his thumb resting lightly on the trigger, "and I will paint this entire table with what little brains you have left."

Julian froze, tears of sheer terror welling in his eyes as a wet stain spread across the front of his designer pants.

Valerie sat quietly in her chair, watching Lorenzo defend her honour with absolute, terrifying devotion. She didn't feel fear. She felt an overwhelming rush of power—a realization that the most dangerous man in the city was completely, utterly wrapped around her finger.

"Put it away, Lorenzo," Don Carmine said softly. "Let the street enforcers handle the trash outside."

Lorenzo lowered his weapon slowly, keeping his dark eyes fixed on Julian until the young man collapsed back into his seat, sobbing hysterically.

Lorenzo turned to Valerie, offering his hand once again.

"Come, my love," he said gently, his voice transforming from death into pure warmth. "Our work here is done."

Valerie placed her hand in his, standing tall beside him as they walked out of the boardroom, leaving the ruined Vance empire behind them.
