Chapter 1 - The Inventory of ShadowsThe blue and red lights of four NYPD cruisers strobed silently against Carona’s white linen tablecloths, casting long, rhythmic shadows across the marble floor.

Two crime scene technicians were dusting the rear hallway for prints. The three would-be robbers—their faces bruised, one with a dislocated shoulder, another nursing a broken jaw—were already being loaded into the back of police vans in heavy steel handcuffs.

Inside the restaurant, Detective Miller sat at table four, holding a thin yellow notepad. He stared at Jisoo with a mixture of intense irritation and complete, utter disbelief.

"Let me get this straight," Miller said, flicking his pen against his palm. "Three armed men enter a high-end restaurant with illegal automatic weapons. One takes you at gunpoint into a restricted corridor. You—a five-foot-five waitress who has worked here for five weeks—disarm the lead gunman, break his jaw, sweep the second gunman’s legs before he can turn his weapon, and force the third into a chokehold until he passes out."

Jisoo stood with her hands folded neatly behind her back, wearing her freshly laundered black apron. Her posture was relaxed, her face smooth and completely devoid of pride or fear.

"The floor in the back hallway was recently polished, Detective," Jisoo explained softly, her voice cool and practical. "He was wearing worn rubber-soled sneakers with poor traction. When he turned to shout at his associate, he shifted his center of gravity to his left heel. I simply assisted his balance in the direction it was already traveling."

Miller squinted at her, his jaw clenching. "And the weapon disarm? That wasn't 'assisted balance,' Miss Park. That was military combat technique."

"My late father was a martial arts instructor in Seoul," Jisoo said smoothly, using the exact cover story she had rehearsed for four long years. "He believed every woman should know how to leverage an attacker’s weight against them."

Miller stared at her for ten long seconds, trying to find a crack in her composure. There was none. She looked like an ordinary, hardworking young woman who had gotten remarkably lucky during a terrifying crime.

"You're free to go for tonight, Miss Park," Miller finally muttered, waving his pen dismissively. "But don't leave the city. The District Attorney will want a statement."

"Thank you, Detective," Jisoo bowed slightly and stepped back.

She didn't return to the staff break room. Instead, she retrieved her simple beige trench coat from the cloakroom and stepped out into the crisp, midnight Manhattan air.

As she walked toward the subway entrance on 57th Street, she felt the unmistakable sensation of an intent gaze burning into her back.

She didn't turn around. She didn't speed up her pace.

Parked beside the fire hydrant thirty yards down the block was a sleek, dark obsidian Maybach with tinted bulletproof glass. Inside the rear passenger seat, partially obscured by the dark interior, Raffaele Mosca sat with a silver lighter turning slowly over in his fingers.

His dark hazel eyes followed her every step until she vanished down the concrete stairwell into the subway station.

"Boss," his driver, a broad-shouldered enforcer named Enzo, said softly from the front seat. "Do you want me to have the boys run her name through our government contacts?"

Raffaele closed the silver lighter with a crisp, metallic snap.

"No," Raffaele replied, his deep voice slicing through the quiet interior of the luxury sedan. "A girl with those instincts doesn't exist on government databases, Enzo. If you look for her in the open, her enemies will notice. Search the private intelligence archives from South Korea—specifically the Special Warfare Command records from six years ago."

Enzo glanced at his boss in the rearview mirror, his brow furrowing. "Special Warfare?"

"She didn't just disarm those men," Raffaele murmured, looking out the tinted window at the empty sidewalk where Jisoo had stood. "She executed an anti-terror extraction sequence in six seconds without breaking her pulse. I want to know who trained her... and who she's hiding from."
