Chapter 2 - The Midnight VisitorJisoo’s apartment was a tiny, third-floor studio in Queens, located above a noisy 24-hour bakery that smelled constantly of yeast and toasted sugar.

It was a fortress disguised as a closet. The single window overlooking the fire escape was fitted with an invisible pressure sensor. The door had three deadbolts, and inside the hollowed-out base of her standing floor lamp rested a suppressed 9mm pistol, two clean passports under different names, and eighty thousand dollars in untraceable cash.
She unlocked the door at 1:15 AM, stepped inside, and closed all three deadbolts without making a sound.
She didn't turn on the overhead light.
Instead, she stood motionless in the dark foyer for three full seconds, her nostrils flaring slightly.
The apartment didn't smell like fresh bread.
It smelled of expensive cedarwood, tobacco, and a faint hint of rain-soaked wool.
Jisoo’s right hand moved with terrifying speed, slipping inside her trench coat toward her concealed waistband.
"I wouldn't," a voice spoke from the shadows near the armchair by the window.
The voice was low, smooth, and possessed the absolute calm of a predator that had already mapped every exit in the building.
A small match struck, casting a warm golden glow across the small room.
Raffaele Mosca sat in her armchair, his long legs crossed, lighting a dark clove cigarette. He wore his tailored charcoal suit, his coat draped over the back of her chair, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar to reveal the edge of a dark, intricate crest tattoo on his chest.
Jisoo didn't draw her weapon, but her stance shifted into an instantaneous combat footing, her center of gravity dropping two inches.
"You're trespassing, Mr. Mosca," Jisoo said, her voice dropping into an icy, dangerous tone that held none of the polite service worker warmth she used at Carona.
"And you are Captain Han Jisoo," Raffaele replied smoothly, blowing a thin plume of sweet smoke toward the ceiling. "Former lead operative of the Republic of Korea Army’s 707th Special Mission Group. Declared killed in action four years ago during a covert counter-insurgency operation near the DMZ."
The small room went dead quiet.
Jisoo didn't flinch, but her eyes narrowed into sharp slits of pure steel. "You have five seconds to explain how you broke into my apartment before I break your collarbone."
Raffaele smiled—a slow, genuinely amused expression that lit up his sharp, rugged features.
"Your lock picker was very polite," Raffaele said, gesturing toward the door. "Enzo used a tension wrench. No damage to the frame. And as for your identity... it took my private intelligence team three hours to decrypt the scrubbed military files from Seoul."
He set his lighter on the small coffee table between them.
"Four years ago, your unit was betrayed by a corrupt defense contractor named Nikolai Volkov," Raffaele continued, his tone turning serious. "Your entire team was ambushed. You survived, faked your death, and hunted down three of Volkov's officers before disappearing into New York's service industry."
Jisoo took a slow, deliberate step forward, her shadow stretching long across the floorboards. "If you know who Volkov is, then you know that anyone who speaks my name dies."
"Volkov arrived in New York yesterday morning, Jisoo," Raffaele revealed quietly.
Jisoo froze. Her breathing stopped entirely.
"The three men who walked into Carona tonight weren't random street robbers," Raffaele said, standing up from the armchair until his broad six-foot-two frame loomed over her. "They were Volkov's scouts. They were sweeping high-end restaurants in Manhattan looking for a woman who fits your physical description."
Jisoo stared at him, her mind racing through dozens of strategic scenarios in milliseconds. "They didn't recognize me."
"Because you were fast enough to neutralize them before they could verify your face," Raffaele acknowledged, stepping closer to her until he was standing just two feet away. "But Volkov knows someone in Carona eliminated his team. By tomorrow morning, he will have the security footage from the back hallway."
He reached out, pulling a clean, black leather binder from his coat and setting it in her hands.
"I offer you a deal, Captain Han," Raffaele murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unshakeable intensity. "You provide security and intelligence for my organization. In exchange, I give you the full power, weapons, and legal immunity of the Mosca network to finish your war with Volkov."
Jisoo looked down at the leather binder, then looked up into the eyes of the most feared mob boss in the tri-state area.
"Why?" she asked coldly. "What does a Mafia boss gain from helping an international ghost?"

Raffaele leaned down slightly, his breath warm against her cheek.
"Because four years ago, Nikolai Volkov murdered my younger brother in Chicago," Raffaele whispered softly. "And I have been waiting four years for someone who knows how to put him in the ground."
