Chapter 3 - The Recipe of TruceBy the third day of her stay at the Vance estate, the tension inside the mansion had shifted into a strange, quiet routine.

Renzo Vance had officially placed a blockade on Kazuo’s legitimate shipping terminals at the harbor, claiming that Kazuo’s distraction with "civilian affairs" made him unfit to manage the family’s upcoming merger with an international transport conglomerate.
While Kazuo spent eighteen hours a day in his study surrounded by lawyers, intelligence agents, and encrypted laptop screens, Nora refused to sit idle in her luxury suite.
She had commandeered the mansion’s state-of-the-art commercial kitchen.
The kitchen, usually pristine and unused by anyone other than a private chef who visited twice a week, was now filled with the rich, comforting aromas of simmering garlic, slow-cooked onions, braised short ribs, and fresh rosemary.
Taro sat comfortably on the tiled floor near the island, his tail thump-thumping rhythmically against the cabinet doors whenever Nora dropped a tiny scrap of cooked carrot or lean beef into his waiting mouth.
The kitchen door pushed open quietly.
Kazuo stepped inside. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows revealing lean, muscular forearms corded with veins and a faint surgical scar near his wrist. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes deeper than before.
He stopped in his tracks, staring at the sight before him.
Nora stood at the stove in a oversized gray sweatshirt and jeans, flour dusted across her cheek, stirring an enormous stainless-steel pot of beef stew with a heavy wooden spoon.
"What are you doing?" Kazuo asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.
"I'm cooking," Nora said, not looking up from the pot. "Your security guards look like they haven't had a warm meal since 2012. And Taro was complaining."
Taro gave a soft, confirming woof from the floor.
Kazuo walked slowly toward the island, leaning his heavy frame against the marble counter. He breathed in the rich, savory steam rising from the pot. For a moment, the sharp, hyper-vigilant posture he carried everywhere seemed to melt away.
"It smells... incredible," Kazuo admitted quietly.
Nora picked up a small tasting spoon, dipped it into the rich brown broth, blew on it twice to cool it down, and held it out across the counter toward him.
"Taste it," she commanded softly. "Tell me if it needs more thyme."
Kazuo hesitated for a fraction of a second. Men in his position did not accept food prepared by others without a security officer testing it first. It was a rule etched into his blood since childhood.
He looked into Nora’s clear, honest brown eyes. He leaned forward and took the spoon directly from her hand, tasting the broth.
A subtle change washed over his face. His eyes closed for a brief second, his chest expanding as he swallowed.
"It's perfect," Kazuo whispered, opening his eyes to look at her. "It tastes like... home."
"Good," Nora smiled, her cheeks flushing slightly beneath the dust of flour. She grabbed a clean towel and reached up to wipe his cheek. "You have broth on your chin, Don Vance."
Kazuo caught her wrist gently. He didn't pull away, nor did he let her go. His warm fingers rested against her pulse point, feeling the rapid, fluttery beat beneath her skin.
"You shouldn't be cooking for my men, Nora," Kazuo said softly, his voice dropping into that dark, magnetic register. "You are my guest. Not my servant."
"I work twelve-hour shifts at a nursing home, Kazuo," Nora replied, looking up into his pale amber eyes without flinching. "I like taking care of people who need it. And right now... every single person in this house looks like they're starving for something real."
Kazuo stared at her, his grip on her wrist loosening, his fingers sliding down to gently entwine with hers.
"My uncle is calling a full council meeting of the families tomorrow night at the Grand Harbor Hotel," Kazuo revealed quietly. "He intends to strip me of my title and force a vote to liquidate my brother's trust accounts."
Nora’s heart sank. "Can he do that?"
"If he has the majority of the board, yes," Kazuo said. "He has bought off three of the five senior directors. I need proof that Renzo was the one who sabotaged my brother's vehicle eighteen months ago. Without it, the board will vote with him."
Nora looked down at Taro, then back at Kazuo. A sudden, bold realization hit her.
"What about the video?" Nora asked.
Kazuo blinked. "The TikTok video?"
"The video went viral because people saw a powerful man being challenged by an ordinary person," Nora said quickly, her eyes lighting up with determination. "Your uncle wants the board to think you're weak because you let a nurse slap your money away. But what if we change the narrative?"
Kazuo leaned in closer, intrigued. "How?"
"Renzo controls the old-guard syndicate leaders through fear and bribery," Nora explained, her hand tightening around Kazuo's. "But your legitimate shipping expansion relies on public contracts, city permits, and international investors. If you show up to that gala tomorrow night with the 'Pot Roast Queen' on your arm—showing that the entire situation was a public relations campaign for a new charitable trust in your brother's name—Renzo looks like a paranoid old fool who doesn't understand modern power."
Kazuo stared at her in utter astonishment. The quiet, exhausted nurse from next door had just devised a brilliant political counter-maneuver that his team of high-priced consultants hadn't even considered.

A slow, genuine smile—the first real smile she had ever seen on his face—spread across Kazuo’s handsome features. It transformed him completely, erasing the cold killer and revealing the brilliant, breathtaking man underneath.
"Miss Chen," Kazuo murmured, raising her flour-dusted hand to his lips and pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her knuckles. "You are far more dangerous than anyone in my organization."
