Chapter 6 - The Feast at the EstateSix months later.

It was a bright, warm Saturday afternoon in early May.
The grand courtyard of the Vance estate was no longer a cold, intimidating fortress of white stone and quiet emptiness.
The iron gates were swung wide open. Colorful spring flowers bloomed in the massive stone planters, and soft jazz music floated through the warm air.
In the center of the lawn stood a long wooden dining table decorated with white linen, fresh wildflowers, and glowing candles.
Sitting around the table were twenty guests: off-duty nurses from the county care facility, local community leaders, Jen (who was happily showing her latest graphic design portfolio to Kazuo's head of security, Marco), and Clara—an elderly nursing home patient whom Nora had personally invited for the weekend.
At the head of the table sat Nora, wearing a simple, gorgeous yellow sundress, laughing as she served generous portions of slow-cooked beef stew, roasted carrots, and crusty garlic bread from a massive ceramic pot.
Beside her sat Kazuo. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed, happy, and remarkably handsome without the heavy weight of the criminal underworld upon his shoulders.
The Vance Logistics Group had been completely restructured. Under Kazuo’s leadership, the syndicate's illicit operations had been entirely liquidated or turned over to law enforcement, transforming the company into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar international logistics firm that funded hospitals, orphanages, and community centers across the state.
And sitting proudly on his very own velvet armchair at the end of the table was Taro.
The massive black dog wore a custom red bandana around his neck that read: Chief Tasting Officer. He was happily munching on a massive, slow-cooked beef bone presented to him on a silver platter.
"To the Pot Roast Queen!" Jen cheered, raising her glass of sparkling wine. "Who turned a mafia boss, a stolen dinner, and a hundred-pound bear-dog into the best thing that ever happened to this city!"
"To Nora!" the guests shouted in unison, raising their glasses with laughter and applause.
Nora blushed, leaning her head against Kazuo’s shoulder.
Kazuo smiled, reaching under the table to take her hand, his thumb gently rubbing the polished gold band resting on her ring finger—a simple, breathtaking engagement ring he had given her three weeks ago under the stars in this very courtyard.
"Are you happy, liebling?" Kazuo whispered into her ear, his breath warm against her cheek.
Nora looked around the lively table—at her best friend laughing, at the elderly patient enjoying a hot meal, at Taro happily chewing his bone, and finally at the incredible man who had traded his cold, dark fortress for a home filled with love and warmth.

"I have a roof over my head, my friends are safe, and the man I love cooks stew with me every Sunday," Nora smiled, leaning up to kiss his lips softly. "I'm the happiest woman in the world."
Kazuo kissed her back, deep and tender, as Taro let out a happy, deep bark, thumping his heavy tail against the warm grass in complete and utter contentment.
