Chapter 5 - The Shadow's Last StandThe convoy of black SUVs moved smoothly through the rain-soaked streets toward the estate.

Nora sat in the back seat of the primary armored vehicle, her head resting comfortably against Kazuo’s shoulder. Taro lay stretched out across the floorboards at their feet, his heavy head resting on Nora’s silk-covered shoes.

Kazuo’s arm was wrapped securely around Nora’s waist, his fingers gently playing with the hem of her dress.

"It’s over, isn't it?" Nora asked softly, looking up into his sharp profile.

"Renzo’s power is broken," Kazuo confirmed quietly. "By tomorrow morning, the board will officially freeze his accounts and strip him of his security clearance. He will be forced into retirement."

Suddenly, Taro’s head snapped up!

A low growl erupted from the dog’s throat.

SCREECH—BOOM!

A heavy commercial flatbed truck rammed into the side of the lead escort SUV at the intersection ahead! Metal screamed, glass shattered, and the lead vehicle flipped onto its side!

"Ambush!" the driver yelled, slamming on the brakes!

Kazuo’s armored SUV skidded across the wet asphalt, coming to a halt in the middle of an abandoned industrial alleyway near the docks.

Before the security guards could deploy, a hail of automatic gunfire rained down upon the vehicle! Bullets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced bulletproof glass, but the tires were blown out by spiked strips laid across the pavement.

Through the rain-streaked window, Nora saw Renzo Vance stepping out from behind a stack of shipping containers, holding an automatic assault rifle, his face twisted in psychotic fury.

"Out of the car, Kazuo!" Renzo’s voice boomed through a loudspeaker. "You took my company! You took my honor! I'm taking your life and your nurse!"

Inside the SUV, Kazuo pulled a sleek tactical sidearm from under his arm. He looked at Nora, his face pale with fierce, protective dread.

"Stay in the vehicle," Kazuo commanded her tightly. "The glass is rated for heavy fire. You are safe inside."

"Kazuo, no! He has heavy weapons!" Nora pleaded, catching his jacket sleeve.

"He threatened you, Nora," Kazuo said softly, kissing her lips with quick, fierce passion. "I am ending this now."

Kazuo kicked open the heavy door, stepping out into the pouring rain and returning fire with precise, lethal efficiency!

The alley erupted into chaotic gunbattles. Kazuo’s tactical team deployed from the rear vehicle, engaging Renzo’s mercenaries among the maze of rusty shipping crates.

Nora watched in terror from the backseat as Kazuo moved like a ghost through the shadows, neutralizing two shooters before taking cover behind a steel pillar.

Suddenly, she saw a mercenary sneaking up behind Kazuo’s position from an elevated cat-walk above! The man leveled his rifle straight at Kazuo’s back!

"Kazuo! Behind you!" Nora screamed through the cracked window, but the sound of gunfire drowned out her voice!

Taro didn't wait.

The massive dog threw his body against the unlatched SUV door, forcing it open, and exploded into the rain!

"Taro! No!" Nora cried out, scrambling out of the car behind him!

Taro sprinted across the wet concrete like a black phantom. He leapt onto a stack of wooden pallets, then launched his hundred-pound frame onto the catwalk above!

Taro slammed into the mercenary just as the man pulled the trigger! The rifle shot went wild, punching a hole into the brick wall above Kazuo's head!

Kazuo spun around, seeing the mercenary falling off the catwalk, with Taro standing triumphantly above!

Renzo, realizing his ambush had failed, panicked. He turned and ran toward a waiting speedboat docked at the edge of the pier.

Kazuo sprinted after him, stepping out onto the wet wooden dock just as Renzo reached the boat’s railing.

"It's over, Renzo," Kazuo said, his voice cutting through the sound of crashing waves and rain. He pointed his weapon straight at his uncle's chest.

Renzo turned, his face wet with rain and sweat, panting heavily. He looked at Kazuo, then saw Nora standing at the end of the dock with Taro at her side.

"You killed Kenji," Kazuo said, his voice flat, emotionless, and cold as death. "You cut his brake lines because he wouldn't let you use his shipping routes for narcotics."

Renzo let out a wild, desperate laugh. "He was weak, Kazuo! Just like you! He cared about peasants and stray animals! He didn't deserve the Vance name!"

Kazuo’s finger tightened on the trigger.

"Kazuo! Stop!" Nora’s voice echoed down the pier.

Kazuo paused, his eyes remaining locked on Renzo, but his posture stiffened.

Nora walked slowly down the dock, stopping five feet behind Kazuo. Rain soaked her midnight-blue dress, her dark hair clinging to her shoulders, but her eyes were steady and filled with absolute clarity.

"Don't do it, Kazuo," Nora whispered softly. "If you execute him in cold blood, you become the monster he wants you to be. You become the man who destroyed your brother's memory."

Kazuo’s chest heaved, his heart tearing between the deep, primal need for vengeance and the soft, pure light of the woman standing behind him.

"He killed Kenji, Nora," Kazuo choked out, his hand trembling slightly against the grip of the gun.

"And he will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security federal prison paying for it," Nora said gently, reaching out to wrap her hands around Kazuo’s gun hand. "The police and federal marshals are five seconds away. Let the law destroy him, Kazuo. Build something clean with me instead."

Kazuo looked at her hands holding his. He looked into her eyes—filled with love, strength, and unwavering faith in him.

Slowly, Kazuo lowered his gun.

Behind them, the dark sky lit up with flashing red and blue lights as ten police cruisers and federal units swarmed the pier, their sirens wailing into the night air.

Federal agents rushed the dock, tackling Renzo Vance to the wooden planks and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Renzo screamed curses as he was dragged away, but Kazuo didn't listen.

He turned his back on his uncle forever, wrapped his arms tightly around Nora’s waist, and buried his face in her wet neck, pulling her close as Taro sat beside them, letting out a loud, victorious bark into the rain.
