Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Kitchen

I didn't look away from Roman’s intense, searching gaze. The truth had lived in the dark for too long; hiding it now felt like spitting on my father’s grave.

“No, Mr. Bellandi,” I said steadily, letting go of the torn fabric so the scar remained fully visible beneath the harsh crystal light. “I didn't stumble into this estate by accident. For thirteen years, I watched from the outside as the men who ordered the fire on Warehouse 4 bought up more real estate, funded political campaigns, and built empires over the ashes of my family's life. The official police report called it a faulty gas line. But my father’s private notebooks—which I managed to salvage from his desk before the roof collapsed—named names. They proved the fire wasn't an accident. It was an inside job designed to wipe out the independent auditors who found discrepancies in the Bellandi-Caruso freight logs.”

At the mention of the surname Caruso, Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, her face draining of color.

“That’s a lie!” Vanessa shrieked, her composure completely shattering. “My father was a legitimate businessman! She’s making this up to ruin us!”

“Your father, Dominic Caruso, was my father’s primary business partner before he decided that eliminating the audit trail was cheaper than paying off his debts,” I replied, my voice ringing clear and steady through the empty ballroom. “And you, Vanessa, grew up in a penthouse built on the insurance payouts from that exact fire.”

Teresa Bellandi slumped heavily into a velvet armchair, covering her face with her shaking hands. The matriarch of the family, who had projected unshakeable strength for decades, was suddenly broken by the ghost of a past she thought her husband had safely buried.

“Roman,” Teresa whispered through her fingers. “Your father... your father told me the fire was an accident caused by union strikers. He swore to me that nobody was inside that office.”

Roman didn't answer his mother immediately. He stood motionless, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. He looked at Vanessa, whose panic was now painfully obvious as she backed slowly toward the double doors, and then back at me. The realization was dawning on him—not just the betrayal of the past, but the fact that the woman he was expected to marry tonight was the direct beneficiary of a murder his own family had covered up to maintain a lucrative partnership with the Caruso syndicate.

“Security,” Roman said quietly, his voice carrying through the hidden intercom system.

Within seconds, two massive security guards appeared at the ballroom entrance, blocking Vanessa’s path.

“Mr. Bellandi!” Vanessa cried out, desperation twisting her features. “You can’t do this! We have a signed agreement! Our families—!”

“Our families are done,” Roman interrupted, his voice absolute and final. “Escort Miss Caruso to her car. Ensure her luggage is shipped to her father's estate before midnight. If she attempts to contact anyone in this house again, remind her what happens to people who try to outrun federal fraud investigations.”

Vanessa was dragged away, her muffled screams echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy mahogany doors swung shut, sealing her fate.
