Chapter 5 - The Confession of the Matriarch

It took three hours in the subterranean private archive beneath the Bellandi estate to untangle thirteen years of corporate fraud, bribery, and bloodshed.

Teresa joined us around 2:00 AM, holding a tarnished silver lockbox she had retrieved from her own bedroom suite. She set it down heavily on the mahogany desk between Roman and me.

“Your father didn't pull the trigger, Clara, and he didn't set the match,” Teresa said, her voice steady now, though shadowed by deep exhaustion. She looked directly into my eyes. “That was Dominic Caruso. When my husband discovered what Caruso had done—that he had trapped audit accountants inside the warehouse to hide his embezzlement—it nearly destroyed our family. But the syndicate ties were too deep, too dangerous. My husband chose silence to protect Roman and me. He traded our honor for survival.”

She opened the silver lockbox. Inside lay a single cassette tape and a signed confession notarized two weeks before my father died, detailing every transaction, every offshore account, and every bribe paid to local officials to bury the investigation.

“My husband died with that guilt,” Teresa continued, her voice breaking slightly. “And I lived with it every day since. When I saw your scar tonight, Clara, I didn't just see a burn. I saw the debt my family owed yours coming due.”

I looked down at the documents, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight that had anchored my chest for thirteen years begin to dissolve. The anger that had fueled my survival, my education in forensic accounting, and my infiltration of this house finally gave way to something else: absolute, unyielding closure.

“My father didn't want vengeance, Mrs. Bellandi,” I said softly. “He wanted the truth to matter.”

Roman picked up the notarized confession, reading through the lines with fierce concentration. When he finished, he placed it carefully back on the desk and looked at me with an expression I had never seen on his face before—open, unguarded, and entirely stripped of the armor he wore to rule his empire.

“The truth matters,” Roman said. “And the men who took your father from you are going to pay for every single page of this ledger.”
