Chapter 1 - The Trap Beneath the ChandelierThe Crystal Ballroom of the Dantis estate was built to intimidate. Situated on the highest ridge overlooking Bellavita City, its soaring ceilings were draped in imported French velvet, and its floors were made of seamless white Carrara marble that mirrored the blinding glare of thousands of crystal shards overhead. Tonight, it was packed with the city’s untouchable elite—judges who took bribes with a smile

At the epicenter of the tension stood Vanessa Dantis, her face carved into an expression of theatrical, performative grief.

“Someone welcomed into this home repaid that generosity with theft,” Vanessa’s voice carried clear and sharp beneath the chandeliers, cutting through the low murmur of the crowd like a switchblade.

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute. Every head in the ballroom snapped toward the corner by the arched French doors.

Every eye landed on Daisy.

Daisy stood frozen beside Bruno—a massive, two-hundred-pound Cane Corso whose reputation for tearing trespassers limb from limb was legendary across Bellavita City. Yet right now, the terrifying beast was leaning his colossal, blocky head gently against Daisy’s thigh, letting out a low, rumbling whimper as if sensing the cruel web closing around her.

Daisy was wearing the only formal dress she owned—a dark, midnight-blue gown that she had painstakingly altered herself to fit her full, voluptuous curves. Resting against the hollow of her throat was a heavy, intricate silver-violet pendant set with rare tourmalines—the sacred heirloom of the Dantis family.

Just twenty minutes earlier, Aleandro Dantis—the ruthless syndicate boss and master of this sprawling estate—had walked into her cramped office, taken the silver-violet pendant from its velvet box, and fastened it around her neck himself. His fingers had brushed her skin with an electric warmth, and his dark eyes had softened as he looked down at her. “It belongs to you tonight, Daisy,” he had murmured, his voice a low vibration that made her heart race. “Let them look. You are the most stunning woman in this room.”

Now, the entire room was staring at her like she was a common pickpocket caught red-handed.

Whispers rippled through the crowd like venomous snakes. “An outsider... a low-level administrative assistant from the logistics wing... wearing the Dantis crown jewel?” “Look at her, she doesn't even know how to stand in a room like this.”

Vanessa stepped forward, her diamond earrings catching the light. “The missing heirloom was taken from the locked third-floor gallery less than an hour ago. Security logs show the sector camera mysteriously went dark during the exact eleven minutes Daisy was documented walking through that wing.”

Daisy knew how this narrative was being written. She had lived it her entire life.

People looked at her patched canvas backpack, her student debt statements, her unbranded shoes, and most of all, the full, soft contours of her body that defied the razor-thin silhouette demanded by high society. They had already decided she did not belong among silk gowns and old money. To them, she was an easy target—a disposable outsider who could be blamed for a crime she never committed, saving the real thief from exposure.

The shame came rushing back in a dark, familiar wave. It tasted like the bitter humiliation of the night her former fiancé had broken off their engagement in front of his snobbish family, telling her she was “too much to handle” and “embarrassing to look at.” It tasted like every room where she had learned to shrink herself, to apologize for taking up space, to swallow her words.

Her mouth opened. She tried to form a defense.

I didn't do it. Aleandro gave it to me. Check the real security logs.

Nothing came out. Her throat felt like it was lined with dry sand.

Bruno pressed his massive, muscular body even harder against her leg, letting out a sharp, protective growl that vibrated through the marble floor. A ripple of fear passed through the front-row spectators who knew what that dog was capable of.

Vanessa smiled softly, playing the gracious, wounded matriarch. “I find it deeply regrettable that someone given so much opportunity would repay the Dantis family this way.”

Aleandro Dantis remained silent near the head of the ballroom.

He stood tall, clad in a razor-sharp charcoal tuxedo, his silver-streaked hair brushed back, his face completely unreadable. His dark eyes were like chips of obsidian—cold, fathomless, and terrifying. He had not rushed to her defense. He had not spoken a word.

Then, the most feared man in Bellavita City moved.

He stepped forward, breaking away from the high-ranking politicians and syndicate capos. He walked slowly across the white marble, passing right between Daisy and the sea of accusing faces. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees as he approached. His expression was cold enough to freeze boiling water.

“You are right, Vanessa,” Aleandro said. His voice was a low, velvet-wrapped threat that echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

Vanessa’s smile widened, a triumphant gleam flashing in her eyes. She thought he was about to seal Daisy’s fate, to cast her out into the cold streets as a sacrifice. “Transparency is important, Aleandro. We cannot let thieves hide behind charity.”

Aleandro did not look at Vanessa. He kept his eyes fixed forward.

He slowly raised one hand toward the massive digital projection screen hidden behind the dais.

The ballroom overhead lights began to dim, plunging the glittering crowd into sudden, nervous darkness.

Daisy looked up at Aleandro’s stony profile, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She was entirely unable to tell whether he was about to defend her—or destroy her in front of the entire city.
