Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Behind the Iron GatesBy midnight, the grand ballroom was completely empty. The champagne flutes had been cleared, the expensive dresses were gone, and the heavy crystal chandeliers were dimmed to a soft, amber glow.

In the private executive study on the fourth floor of the Dantis estate, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the glittering chaos downstairs.

The room was paneled in dark mahogany, lined from floor to ceiling with leather-bound ledgers, historical texts, and antique maps of Bellavita City. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, casting dancing shadows across the Persian rugs.

Daisy sat in a deep, oversized leather armchair near the hearth. Her bare feet were tucked up beneath her, and she was holding a mug of hot spiced tea between both palms. The midnight-blue gown felt heavy now, a reminder of a battlefield she had miraculously survived.

Bruno lay sprawled across her feet like a living, breathing rug, his heavy chin resting contentedly over her ankles, emitting a low, rhythmic snoring sound.

The heavy oak door swung open silently.

Aleandro walked in. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket and bow tie; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, corded muscles and faint scars from a life carved out of violence and survival.

He walked over to a crystal decanter on the sideboard, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy glass, and walked slowly toward the fire.

Instead of sitting behind his massive desk, Aleandro sank down onto the floor right beside Daisy’s chair. He rested one arm against the armrest, looking up at her with those dark, bottomless eyes.

“You’re awfully quiet,” Aleandro said, his voice smooth and low, devoid of the terrifying edge he had used in the ballroom.

Daisy took a slow sip of her tea, looking down at him. “I thought you were going to throw me to the wolves, Aleandro. When Vanessa stood up there... when everyone was staring... I honestly thought you had set me up as a distraction.”

Aleandro’s expression darkened slightly, a flicker of genuine pain crossing his sharp features. He reached out, his large calloused hand gently cupping the side of her face, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone.

“Look at me, Daisy,” he commanded softly.

She met his gaze.

“I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who wear masks,” Aleandro said, his voice steady and intense. “Politicians who smile while cutting throats. Family members who plot murder over dinner. They are pristine, they are thin, they fit every pathetic standard this city worships—and they are rotten to the core.”

He leaned his thumb gently against her lower lip.

“You are real,” Aleandro continued. “You are brilliant, you are resilient, and you carry a warmth that could melt every stone in this estate. The moment Julian and Vanessa tried to use your background and your body as a weapon against you, they signed their own death warrants. No one touches what is mine.”

A warm, electric shiver traveled down Daisy’s spine. What is mine.

She had spent years believing her body, her curves, and her working-class roots were liabilities that made her unworthy of love or respect. Yet here, sitting in the heart of the most dangerous mafia empire in the country, the most feared man in the city was looking at her as if she were the only treasure that mattered in the world.

“And Bruno?” Daisy asked with a faint, hesitant smile, looking down at the giant dog snoring against her feet. “Why does he bite every single armed guard who comes within ten feet of your office, but he sleeps on my toes like a puppy?”

Aleandro chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that vibrated warmly in the quiet room.

“Because Bruno is a judge of character,” Aleandro said, his eyes locking onto hers with unmistakable devotion. “He knows who belongs here. And he knows who makes me human.”
