Chapter 2 - The Logic of the BeastThe massive projection screen flickered to life, casting a brilliant, blinding blue light across the marble floor of the Crystal Ballroom.

Instead of security footage showing Daisy creeping through a dark hallway, the screen displayed a pristine, high-resolution digital schematic of the Dantis estate’s internal network architecture. Columns of encrypted metadata, server routing logs, and facial recognition timestamps began scrolling downward at blinding speed.

A collective murmur of confusion swept through the crowd.

Vanessa’s triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. Her eyes darted toward the screen, then toward Aleandro, a sudden knot of panic tightening in her chest. “Aleandro... what is this? Why are we looking at server logs? The girl had the necklace in her possession—!”

“Quiet, Vanessa,” Aleandro commanded. His voice was not loud, but it carried the absolute, crushing weight of a death sentence.

Aleandro turned his head slightly, his gaze dropping down to Daisy. The intimidating, razor-sharp edge of his demeanor vanished the instant his eyes met hers, replaced by a fierce, private warmth that only she was allowed to see. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing against her knuckles. The warmth of his skin sent a stabilizing shockwave through her trembling fingers.

“You didn't think I would leave you undefended in a room full of wolves, did you?” Aleandro murmured softly, so only she could hear.

Before Daisy could process the words, Aleandro turned back to the crowd, his posture stiffening into that of an apex predator defending its territory.

“For the past three months,” Aleandro’s deep voice resonated across the silent hall, “my chief logistics assistant, Daisy Hart, has been conducting a comprehensive internal audit of this estate’s accounts, security protocols, and asset inventories. She was brought in not because she needed charity, but because she possesses an intellect that runs rings around every single corporate parasite in this room.”

He pointed a steady finger toward the screen.

“The third-floor gallery camera didn't 'mysteriously go dark' by accident, Vanessa. It was overridden by a hardwired relay switch located inside the private west-wing study—a study that requires a biometric master key to access.”

Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color. She stepped backward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the marble. “That’s absurd! Anyone could have accessed—!”

“Only three people in this entire compound possess the biometric clearance for that study,” Aleandro interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying ice. “Myself. Head of Security Marcus Thorne. And my cousin, Julian Dantis.”

At the mention of Julian’s name, a sharp gasp echoed from the edge of the crowd.

Julian Dantis—a slick, impeccably dressed man with thinning hair and twitchy eyes—tried to edge his way toward the side exit.

He didn't make it two steps.

Bruno let out a deafening, thunderous roar—a sound so primal and ferocious that it made half the politicians in the room jump in terror. In a fraction of a second, the two-hundred-pound Cane Corso launched himself across the polished marble floor.

The beast didn't attack the crowd. He didn't harm a soul. But he intercepted Julian with terrifying precision, slamming his massive chest squarely against Julian’s midsection and driving him hard against a marble pillar with a sickening thud.

Julian let out a high-pitched squeak of pure terror as Bruno’s jaws snapped inches from his throat, hot breath misting against his expensive silk tie.

“Get this monster off me!” Julian screamed, clawing frantically at the air as he pissed himself slightly against the column.

Aleandro walked over slowly, standing over his cowering cousin like a god of judgment.

“You tried to steal the Dantis heirloom, Julian,” Aleandro said calmly, pulling a sleek, encrypted data drive from his pocket and tossing it onto the floor beside Julian’s shoe. “And then you tried to frame an innocent woman because you assumed her background and her appearance made her an easy scapegoat in a room full of snobs.”

Julian looked up, shaking like a leaf. “I—I was set up! She—she’s just an assistant, she doesn't belong here—!”

“She belongs wherever she chooses to stand,” Aleandro interrupted, his voice cutting off any further argument. He turned around, walking back through the terrified crowd until he stood right beside Daisy once more.

He reached out, his large hand resting firmly, possessively at the small of her back, anchoring her against his side.

“The Dantis family does not tolerate thieves,” Aleandro announced to the silent, petrified ballroom. “And we certainly do not tolerate cowards who prey on those they deem beneath them. Security will escort Julian out. As for the rest of you... the party is over.”
