Chapter 3 - The DiscrepancyThree weeks passed in a blur of spreadsheets, legal documents, and high-altitude silence.

Claire adapted to her new life with a speed that surprised even herself. She moved into a small, quiet desk situated just inside Dominic's private office, separated only by a wall of tinted glass.

Her front-row seat to the inner workings of the Hale empire revealed a complex, brutal world. Dominic worked eighteen hours a day, managing a vast network of legitimate commercial interests alongside the darker, unwritten arrangements that kept the family's rivals at bay.

He was demanding, meticulous, and entirely unyielding—but he was never cruel. He treated his staff with a quiet, icy respect, and to Claire’s surprise, he listened when she spoke.

Vanessa Hale had been banished from the upper floors of the building by Dominic's explicit order, an indignity that had sent shockwaves through the family's inner circle.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon in November, Claire was sitting at her desk, cross-referencing shipping manifests from the family’s primary logistics terminal at the Port of Chicago.

Her pink highlighter hovered over a set of invoices from 2009.

She froze.

She re-calculated the column on her desk calculator.

Then she opened a secondary digital archive containing the personal estate records of Raymond Hale—Dominic's incapacitated father.

The numbers didn't make sense.

In October of 2009, a wire transfer of $2.4 million had been routed from a subsidiary account named Apex Maritime Services into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

Apex Maritime had been a small freight forwarding company owned by Claire’s father, Arthur Bennett, before his tragic death in a car accident fifteen years ago.

Claire’s breath caught in her throat.

Her father had been an independent logistics manager who had worked out of a small office near the docks. When he died in the autumn of 2009, the police report had called it a tragic solo vehicle crash on an icy night. Following his death, his company had gone bankrupt, leaving Claire and her mother with nothing.

Why was Raymond Hale routing millions of dollars through her late father's company weeks before he died?

Claire pulled up the secondary tax filings for Apex Maritime from that exact month.

Beneath the digital signature of the company's treasurer sat a scanned image of a paper document.

It was her father's signature.

Except it wasn't.

Claire stared at the screen, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. She knew her father’s handwriting intimately; he had written her letters every week when she was a child. The letter 'A' in Arthur was drawn with a distinct, double-looped top that he had used his entire life.

The signature on the wire transfer document was a clean, precise forgery.

Someone had used her father’s small, struggling business as a blind shell to launder millions of dollars—and three weeks later, Arthur Bennett was dead.

Before Claire could digest the realization, the heavy double doors of the private office burst open.

Dominic’s lead security chief, a broad-shouldered man named Vance, stepped into the room, his face pale and tight.

"Boss," Vance said, ignoring Claire entirely as he walked straight toward Dominic’s inner office. "We have a problem. The old man's medical facility just called."

Dominic stood up from his desk instantly. "What happened?"

"Raymond woke up," Vance whispered. "He's speaking."
