Chapter 6 - The Real EnemyDominic stepped instantly in front of Claire, his tall frame shielding her completely from the gun in his sister's hand.

"Put the gun down, Vanessa," Dominic said, his voice flat, calm, and utterly devoid of fear.

"No!" Vanessa shrieked. "I went through Father's private safe at the estate after you left! I found the offshore account statements from 2009! It wasn't Father who stole that $2.4 million, Dominic! It was ME!"

Claire gasped from behind Dominic's back.

Dominic didn't move an inch. His eyes narrowed slightly. "What did you say?"

Vanessa let out a wild, hysterical laugh, her eyes wide under the dim office lights.

"I was twenty-two!" Vanessa cried out. "I had gambling debts in Monaco! Two million dollars! Father found out, and he was going to cut me out of the trust! He was going to leave everything to YOU! So he covered it up! He used that stupid little accountant—her father—to absorb the loss!"

"You..." Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You stole the money. And Father killed Arthur Bennett to cover your tracks?"

"Father did what he had to do to protect the family name!" Vanessa shouted, her hand shaking as she pointed the pistol directly at Dominic's chest. "He protected ME! Just like you were supposed to do! But instead, you brought his daughter into our offices! You gave her a job! You let her dig through our files! You betrayed us for a waitress!"

"She's more of a human being than you will ever be," Dominic said coldly.

"Hand over the ledger, Dominic," Vanessa ordered, motioning to the two thugs beside her. "We burn the book, we get rid of the girl, and we go back to business as usual. Otherwise, I'll tell the family board that you've gone soft and had to be replaced."

One of the thugs stepped forward, reaching toward the desk for Arthur Bennett's notebook.

"Touch that book," Dominic said softly, "and you won't leave this floor alive."

The thug paused, glancing nervously at Dominic. Even with a gun pointed at him, Dominic Hale carried an authority that made dangerous men hesitate.

"Shoot him, you idiot!" Vanessa screamed.

Before the thug could raise his weapon, the Tinted glass door behind Vanessa shattered inward in an explosion of safety glass.

Vance and four Vercetti-trained security guards swarmed into the room from the private executive hallway, their weapons raised with military precision.

"Drop the weapon!" Vance roared.

Vanessa panicked. Her finger tightened on the trigger of her pearl-handled pistol.

BANG!

A shot echoed through the office.

Dominic didn't flinch. He had already moved, turning his body and pulling Claire down to the floor behind the heavy oak desk as the bullet slammed harmlessly into the wooden wall panelling behind them.

Before Vanessa could fire a second time, Vance tackled her to the ground, twisting the pistol from her hand as the two thugs threw their hands into the air, surrendering immediately.

The room fell into a heavy, ringing silence.

Vanessa lay on the plush carpet, sobbing hysterically as Vance cuffed her wrists behind her back.

"Take them to the basement," Dominic ordered, standing up slowly and adjusting his cuffs. "Call Federal Prosecutor Miller. Tell him I have fifteen years of financial fraud, wire embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder ready for his grand jury."

Vanessa looked up from the floor, her eyes wide with shock. "Dominic! You can't do this! I'm your sister! We're family!"

Dominic walked over, looking down at her with absolute, icy contempt.

"Family doesn't murder innocent fathers to cover up gambling debts, Vanessa," Dominic said quietly. "You spent your whole life thinking the Hale name made you untouchable. Tonight, you find out what it really means."

Vance dragged Vanessa and the two lieutenants out of the office, their footsteps fading down the long, carpeted corridor until the double doors clicked shut.

The room was quiet once more.

Dominic turned back to the oak desk. He picked up Arthur Bennett's yellowed notebook, holding it with deep, gentle care.

He walked over to Claire, who was standing near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the rain falling over the city.

"This book belongs to you," Dominic said softly, placing the leather ledger into her hands. "Tomorrow morning, my legal team will begin the process of liquidating fifty percent of my father's personal estate. Every cent of the money stolen from your father's business, plus fifteen years of interest, will be placed into a permanent trust in your name."

Claire looked down at her father's handwriting, tears spilling softly down her cheeks. For fifteen years, her family had lived under the shadow of disgrace, poverty, and unanswered questions. Now, finally, the truth was clear.

"What about you, Dominic?" Claire asked, looking up into his eyes. "What happens to Hale Enterprises?"

"I am dismantling the illegitimate branches of the business," Dominic said, stepping closer to her, his dark eyes filled with a clear, honest light she had never seen before. "No more shadow deals. No more extortion. I'm turning this company into a clean, legitimate logistics firm. But..."

He paused, looking down at her with a gentle, hesitant vulnerability.

"I can't do it alone," Dominic whispered. "I need someone beside me who reminds me of who I want to be. Someone who isn't afraid to tell me when I'm wrong."

Claire looked at the man standing before her. He was no longer the feared crime boss who sat in the shadows of Bellweather; he was a man who had chosen justice over his own family's dark legacy, a man who had protected her when the bullets started flying.

She set her father's ledger gently on the table.

Then, she reached out, taking Dominic's hands in hers.

"My starting salary as Chief Operating Officer is going to be two hundred thousand," Claire said, a small, beautiful smile breaking through her tears. "And I get to keep my pink calculator."

Dominic let out a rich, quiet laugh—the first real laugh she had ever heard from him.

He pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her waist as he brought his lips down to hers in a tender, passionate kiss that washed away fifteen years of shadows, pain, and deceit.

Outside the windows of Hale Tower, the autumn storm began to clear, revealing the bright, shimmering lights of Chicago stretching out beneath the night sky—clean, bright, and full of endless hope.
