Chapter 4 - The Voice in the ShadowsThe private care facility in Oak Brook was disguised as an aristocratic country estate, surrounded by high iron fences, manicured gardens, and discreet armed security guards posted at every entrance.

The air inside smelled of expensive lavender disinfectant and polished floor wax.

Dominic walked down the wide, carpeted hallway with long, rapid strides. Claire followed two paces behind him, clutching her leather notebook to her chest. She had insisted on coming, claiming she needed to update the estate's financial ledger signatures, but in reality, her mind was screaming with questions about her father.

Dominic pushed open the double doors of the master suite.

Inside, sitting in a motorized wheelchair beside a window overlooking the gray autumn garden, was Raymond Hale.

The elder Hale was seventy-two years old, his body gaunt and withered beneath a silk dressing gown. The stroke six months prior had paralyzed his right side, leaving his face partially slack, but his remaining dark eye was wide, alert, and filled with a sharp, frantic light.

Standing beside his chair was Vanessa Hale, holding a glass of water, her face flushed with excitement.

"Dominic!" Vanessa exclaimed as they entered. "Look at him! Doctor Vance says his cognitive functions are returning! He recognized me twenty minutes ago!"

Dominic stopped at the foot of the chair. He looked at his father with a strange, complex mixture of deep reverence and profound exhaustion.

"Father," Dominic said softly.

Raymond’s mouth twitched. A low, raspy sound issued from his throat, like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

"D... Dominic," the old man wheezed, his left hand trembling on the armrest of his chair.

"Don't strain yourself," Dominic said, stepping closer and placing a firm hand on his father's good shoulder. "The doctors said your speech center is still recovering."

Raymond’s eye moved past Dominic, shifting across the room until it landed directly on Claire.

The old man’s breath caught in his throat. His chest heaved violently.

"Who... who is... that?" Raymond croaked, pointing a trembling, thin finger at Claire.

"That is Claire Bennett, Father," Dominic explained calmly. "She is my new administrative auditor."

"Bennett?" Raymond gasped. His single functional eye dilated with sudden, naked terror. "Arthur... Arthur Bennett's... girl?"

Claire stepped forward, her heart hammering against her sternum.

"You knew my father, Mr. Hale?" Claire asked, her voice tight and ringing with suppressed emotion.

Raymond’s left hand gripped the armrest so hard his knuckles turned white. He began to shake his head violently from side to side, a series of panicked, broken sounds escaping his lips.

"No... no... keep her away..." Raymond rasped, his speech becoming slurred as his heart monitor began to beep frantically. "The ledger... he kept... the duplicate ledger..."

Vanessa stepped between Claire and her father, pushing Claire back with a sneer.

"Get out!" Vanessa spat. "Can't you see you're upsetting him? You don't belong here, waitress!"

"Vanessa, shut up," Dominic commanded, his voice cold as ice. He turned to the attending nurse. "Stabilize him."

The nurse stepped forward, administering a mild sedative through Raymond's IV line. Within two minutes, the old man’s frantic breathing slowed, his eyelid drooping as the medication took hold, plunging him back into a deep, artificial sleep.

Dominic stood in the center of the quiet room, his eyes fixed on his unconscious father.

Then he turned slowly to face Claire.

His dark eyes were no longer calm. They were sharp, dangerous, and filled with a sudden, lethal suspicion.

"What do you know about Arthur Bennett, Claire?" Dominic asked softly.

Claire held his gaze, refusing to back down despite the suffocating pressure in the room.

"Arthur Bennett was my father, Dominic," Claire said, her voice steady and clear. "And twenty minutes ago, I found a forged wire transfer in your family's archives showing that your father laundered $2.4 million through my dad's company three weeks before he was killed in a car crash."

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh. "Is she serious? Dominic, this penniless girl is trying to accuse our father of murder!"

Dominic ignored his sister entirely. He kept his eyes locked on Claire.

"My car," Dominic said quietly to Vance. "We're going back to the office. Now."
