Chapter 5 - The Duplicate LedgerThe forty-third floor of Hale Tower was dark when they returned at 8:00 PM.

Rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the city lights below into distorted ribbons of yellow and red.

Dominic sat behind his massive oak desk, the lights dimmed, leaving his face carved in deep shadows. Claire stood on the other side of the desk, holding a yellowed, dusty leather notebook that Vance had just retrieved from a private safe in the basement of her late mother's house.

It was the duplicate ledger Raymond Hale had gasped about in his delirium.

Her mother had kept it tucked inside an old box of sewing patterns for fifteen years, never knowing what the dense columns of handwritten numbers meant.

Claire laid the notebook onto the polished oak desk.

"My father wasn't a criminal, Dominic," Claire said softly, her voice trembling slightly with the emotion she had kept buried for fifteen years. "He was an honest man who ran a small logistics business. In 2009, your father's men came to him and forced him to clear shipments through his docks without inspection. When my father realized they were using his business to move weapons and stolen assets, he started keeping a second set of books."

Dominic reached out his long fingers, opening the leather cover of the notebook.

The pages were filled with Arthur Bennett’s precise, neat handwriting—detailing dates, container numbers, wire transfer routing codes, and signatures.

As Dominic flipped through the pages, his expression grew progressively darker, his jaw tightening until a muscle leaped in his cheek.

"My father told me Arthur Bennett was a rogue contractor who stole money from us and fled the city," Dominic whispered, his voice dropping into a register that was terrifying in its absolute quietness. "He told me Arthur died running from his own debts."

"He lied to you," Claire said, tears finally brimming in her hazel eyes. "Your father forged my dad's signature on a $2.4 million theft, blamed him for the missing money, and then had his brakes cut on the Clark Street bridge so he couldn't talk to the police."

The silence in the room was absolute, save for the rhythmic drumming of rain against the glass.

Dominic stared down at the handwritten entries of a dead man.

For fifteen years, he had believed his father was a ruthless but principled leader who protected his family and punished only those who betrayed them. Now, looking at the meticulous records written by a small business owner who had been murdered to cover up a theft, the illusion shattered completely.

"Dominic..." Claire whispered, stepping closer to the desk. "Did you know?"

Dominic looked up at her.

For the first time since she had met him, the cold, impenetrable mask he wore completely crumbled. Beneath it lay a profound, dark anguish—the realization that his entire legacy, his family's empire, was built on the blood of innocent people like her father.

"No," Dominic said, his voice raw and shaking slightly. "On my life, Claire... I didn't know."

He stood up slowly, walked around the desk, and stopped inches from her.

He reached out his hand, his fingers hovering near her face for a moment before gently wiping away a single tear that had escaped down her cheek. His touch was surprisingly warm, soft, and filled with a quiet reverence.

"I spent my whole life trying to be the son he wanted me to be," Dominic whispered, looking deep into her eyes. "I took over his business, I carried his debts, I protected his name... and all the while, he was a monster who ruined your family."

"You aren't him, Dominic," Claire said softly, leaning slightly into his hand. "You don't have to carry his sins."

Before Dominic could answer, the door to the outer office swung open.

Vanessa Hale stood in the doorway, flanked by two heavy-set men in dark raincoats—men Claire recognized as veteran lieutenants from Raymond’s old inner circle.

Vanessa held a pearl-handled pistol in her gloved right hand, her face twisted into a mask of frantic, manic hatred.

"I knew it," Vanessa spat, stepping into the room. "I knew this little street rat would ruin everything! Hand over that book, Dominic!"
