Chapter 5 - Ashes and Redemption

Three weeks passed.

The scandal of Vanessa Vance and Julian Vance dominated every major newspaper, television network, and financial journal in North America.

With the overwhelming digital video evidence, bank paper trails provided by Carlos Mendoza, and testimony from the corrupt notary Hector Gomez (who traded a full confession for a lighter sentence), Vanessa and Julian were convicted on all counts. The judge sentenced both to thirty-five years in a high-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.

Every asset Vanessa had acquired—including her designer wardrobes, jewelry, and offshore accounts—was seized by the federal courts and permanently transferred into a protected trust for Diego and Santiago.

The mansion in Lomas de Chapultepec fell into a deep, peaceful quiet.

It was a soft Sunday afternoon. Golden sunlight filtered through the nursery windows, where two-year-old Diego and Santiago were happily playing on a thick plush rug, stacking wooden building blocks into tall towers and laughing as they knocked them down.

In the corner of the room stood a single battered leather suitcase.

Rosita stood near the window, wearing her simple floral dress. Her hair was neatly combed, but her face was filled with a quiet, bittersweet melancholy.

She had spent the morning folding her few clothes, packing her old shoes, and making sure the boys' clothes were fully washed, organized, and labeled for whoever Alejandro would hire next.

Now that the trial was over, now that Alejandro had fully recovered his sight and taken back control of his empire, Rosita believed her humble duty was finished. She was a simple village girl with no high-society education. She felt out of place in a grand mansion worth millions.

She knelt beside the boys, pulling both toddlers into her arms and burying her face in their soft hair, weeping silently.

"I will miss you so much, my little stars," Rosita sobbed softly, kissing Diego’s cheek, then Santiago’s forehead. "Always remember to listen to your father. Always remember that Rosita loves you with all her heart."

"Rosita go?" little Santiago babbled, his big dark eyes looking at her in confusion as he pointed at her suitcase near the door. "Rosita stay! No go!"

"I have to go, sweetie," Rosita whispered, wiping her nose with a handkerchief. "This isn't my home."

"Where do you think you are going, Rosita?"

Rosita gasped, spinning around.

Alejandro stood in the doorway. He was wearing a casual cashmere sweater and dark jeans. His dark eyes were fixed on her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her chest.

"Mr... Mr. Alejandro," Rosita stammered, quickly wiping her tears and standing up. "I... I was just finishing up the boys' laundry schedules. I packed my suitcase so I wouldn't be in your way when the new professional nanny arrives."

Alejandro walked slowly into the nursery. He didn't look at the suitcase. He stopped two inches from her, looking down into her trembling, beautiful face.

"New nanny?" Alejandro asked, his voice low and incredibly gentle. "Who said anything about a new nanny?"

"Well... you are a very wealthy man, sir," Rosita said softly, looking down at her worn shoes. "You need someone with a university degree, someone who speaks English and French, someone who fits into your world. I am just a maid from a small village in Oaxaca. I only stayed to protect the boys from Miss Vanessa. Now that they are safe..."

Alejandro reached out. His warm, strong fingers gently took hold of her chin, raising her face until her eyes met his.

"Look at me, Rosita," Alejandro commanded softly.

Rosita looked up, her dark eyes swimming with tears.

"When I was trapped in darkness," Alejandro whispered, his voice rich with deep emotion, "I saw the true nature of everyone around me. Wealthy society women who laughed while my children cried. Lawyers who cared only for fees. A fiancée who wanted to murder me for my bank accounts."

He took both of her small, calloused hands into his broad palms, squeezing them tight.

"And then I saw you," Alejandro continued, a tear slipping down his own cheek. "A woman who had nothing, yet gave everything. A woman who stood between two hungry wolves to shield my motherless sons. A woman whose heart is purer than all the diamonds in this city."

Rosita’s breath caught in her throat. "Mr. Alejandro..."

"Don't call me Mr. Alejandro," he murmured, stepping closer, his chest pressing against hers. "My name is Alejandro. And this mansion is not a home without you, Rosita."

Diego and Santiago trotted over, each grabbing one of Rosita’s legs and looking up with big, hopeful eyes.

"Rosita stay!" Diego cheered, clapping his little hands. "Mommy Rosita stay!"

Rosita covered her mouth, a loud sob of pure, overwhelming joy escaping her lips.

May you like

Alejandro smiled—a radiant, breathtaking smile that lit up his entire face. He leaned down, placing a soft, tender kiss against Rosita’s forehead, then held her tight against his chest while his sons hugged them both around their legs.

"You are never leaving this house, Rosita," Alejandro whispered into her hair. "Unless it is to walk down the aisle with me."
