Chapter 2 - The Ink of Treachery

The morning sun broke over the elegant tree-lined avenues of Lomas de Chapultepec, casting long golden light across the marble floor of the mansion’s grand dining room.
Vanessa was in an extraordinarily good mood.
She sat at the long glass table, wearing a crisp white linen suit that screamed wealth and sophistication. She was sipping espresso from a porcelain cup while scanning a thick leather-bound folder presented by a man sitting across from her.
The man was Licenciado Hector Gomez—a corrupt, slick-haired notary public whom Vanessa and her secret lover had paid fifty thousand dollars to forge and validate illegal transfer deeds.
"Is everything ready, Hector?" Vanessa whispered, leaning across the table and keeping her voice hushed.
Gomez adjusted his gold wire glasses and smirked. "The documents are ironclad, Miss Vanessa. Once Mr. Rivers places his signature on these three lines, full administrative authority over Rivers Global Logistics, his real estate portfolio in Cancún and Mexico City, and his offshore accounts in Panama are officially transferred to your management."
"And the custody clause?" Vanessa asked, her dark eyes glittering with greed.
"Page twelve," Gomez replied, tapping a finger against the paper. "It specifies that due to his severe disability and vision loss, primary legal guardianship of Diego and Santiago Rivers is assigned to you as his designated conservator. You can enroll them in the Swiss residential academy by next week, and no judge in Mexico will stop you."
Vanessa let out a soft, triumphant laugh. "Magnificent."
At that moment, the swing doors of the kitchen opened.
Rosita walked in carrying a silver tray with fresh orange juice, whole-wheat toast, and poached eggs. Her steps were quiet, her eyes kept respectfully low.
"Your breakfast, Miss Vanessa," Rosita said softly, setting a plate down.
Vanessa’s smile instantly evaporated into an expression of intense disgust.
"Take it back," Vanessa snapped, waving her hand as if Rosita carried a contagious disease. "The eggs are too cold. And why aren't you upstairs cleaning the toddlers' bathroom? I told you I want this house spotless before the estate lawyers arrive!"
"I was just feeding the boys, Miss Vanessa—"
"I don't care what you were doing!" Vanessa hissed, standing up and stepping right into Rosita’s personal space. "You are a maid, Rosita! You do what you are told, when you are told! When Alejandro signs these papers today, my first official act as lady of this estate will be throwing your cheap plastic suitcase into the street!"
Rosita flinched, holding the heavy tray tightly against her stomach to keep her hands from trembling.
"Miss Vanessa, please," Rosita whispered, tears welling up in her dark eyes. "I will do all the cleaning. I will work eighteen hours a day. Just... please don't separate me from the boys. They need someone who loves them—"
SLAP!
The sharp, crack of a hand striking face echoed through the dining room.
Rosita’s head snapped to the side. She stumbled back two steps, her hand flying to her left cheek, which immediately burned bright red. She didn't scream. She didn't drop the silver tray. She simply stood there, tears overflowing her lashes, her chest heaving as she swallowed her pain.
"Don't you ever dare question my authority in this house again, you pathetic little peasant!" Vanessa snarled, pointing a manicured finger at the door. "Get out of my sight! Go to the cellar and organize the holiday crates until I call you! If I see your ugly face up here again before noon, I'll have the police arrest you for theft!"
Behind the grand archway leading to the main corridor, Alejandro stood hidden behind a massive marble pillar.
His hands were clenched into fists so tight his fingernails cut into his palms, drawing tiny beads of blood. Every muscle in his body screamed at him to step out, grab Vanessa by her neck, and throw her through the glass doors into the courtyard.
Not yet, he told himself, breathing through his nose with lethal control. Not yet. Let her dig her own grave so deep she can never crawl out.
"Rosita," a calm, firm voice suddenly echoed from the hallway.
Everyone in the dining room froze.
Alejandro stepped out from behind the pillar. He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit. His dark glasses covered his eyes, and his carbon-fiber cane tapped steadily against the marble floor.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
"Mr. Alejandro!" Vanessa exclaimed, her voice instantly transforming back into a soft, loving purr as she hurried over to take his arm. "Darling! You're awake early! I was just telling Rosita to take a break because she looked so tired."
Alejandro did not smile. He didn't pull away from Vanessa, but his body remained as hard as stone.
"Rosita," Alejandro said, turning his head in the direction of the young nanny's soft sobbing. "Where are my sons?"
Rosita wiped her cheek quickly with the back of her apron, trying desperately to keep her voice steady. "They... they are in the playpen in the sunroom, Mr. Alejandro. I gave them their wooden blocks."
"Go sit with them, Rosita," Alejandro commanded softly, but with an authority that left no room for argument. "Do not go to the cellar. Stay with my sons. Feed them their fruit. That is your only duty today."
Rosita looked up, stunned. She looked from Alejandro’s impassive face to Vanessa’s furious, glaring eyes.
"Yes, Mr. Alejandro," Rosita whispered. She bowed her head quickly and hurried out of the room toward the sunroom.
Vanessa clenched her jaw, her nails digging slightly into Alejandro’s sleeve before she caught herself and smoothed her expression.
"You're far too soft on her, darling," Vanessa purred, guiding him toward the head of the dining table. "Servants like her take advantage of your gentle heart. But don't worry about house matters today. Licenciado Gomez is here with the legal documents we discussed!"
Gomez stood up, offering a slick, oily smile that Alejandro could see with perfect clarity through his lenses.
"Good morning, Mr. Rivers," Gomez said, stepping forward with a pen. "It is an honor. Miss Vanessa has explained your tragic condition. I have all the conservatorship and corporate authority papers ready for your mark."
"How wonderful," Alejandro said flatly, sitting down in the heavy leather chair. "I am so blessed to have a fiancée who cares so deeply for my affairs while I am trapped in this... darkness."
"Oh, Alejandro," Vanessa squeaked, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "I would do anything for you and the boys. You know that."
Before Gomez could place the forged papers in front of Alejandro, the heavy front doors of the mansion were pushed open with tremendous force.
Footsteps echoed through the double-height foyer—heavy, confident, military-style steps.
"I hope I'm not interrupting an estate meeting," a deep, booming voice announced.
Vanessa spun around, her eyes widening in sudden shock.
Walking into the dining room, flanked by two junior legal associates carrying thick leather briefcases, was Carlos Mendoza.
"Carlos?" Vanessa gasped, her voice dropping an octave. "What... what are you doing here? Alejandro didn't invite you."
Carlos did not even acknowledge her. He walked straight up to Alejandro, placing a heavy, reassuring hand on his friend's shoulder.
"Good morning, Alejandro," Carlos said firmly. "As chief counsel for Rivers Global, I received an automated alert from your secure server that a third-party notary was attempting to modify your corporate power of attorney."
Gomez paled slightly, shuffling his papers back into his folder. "Now see here, Mr. Mendoza! Miss Vanessa requested these documents as his legal betrothed—"
"Miss Vanessa holds no legal title in this company or this household," Carlos snapped, turning his piercing gaze onto the nervous notary. "And if I find out you are attempting to execute documents with a client who lacks verified medical capacity without his primary legal team present, I will have the State Bar revoke your license before lunch."
Vanessa’s heart began to hammer against her ribs. She shot a desperate look at Gomez, then quickly grabbed Alejandro’s hand, squeezing it with desperate affection.
"Alejandro, darling! Tell him!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice pitching up into a hysterical tone. "Tell Carlos that we decided this together! You trust me, don't you? You know I only want to protect you and the boys!"
Alejandro sat perfectly still in his chair.
Through his dark glasses, he looked directly at Vanessa’s frantic, panic-stricken face.
"Of course I trust you, Vanessa," Alejandro said slowly, a cold, terrifying smile appearing on his lips. "That is why Carlos is here. To make sure the papers you sign today are... completely binding."
Vanessa blinked, confused by his choice of words. "The papers... I sign?"
Carlos stepped forward, pulling a crisp, gold-stamped document from his associate’s briefcase and placing it directly on the table in front of Vanessa.
"This is an official amendment to the Rivers Family Estate Trust," Carlos announced smoothly. "Since you are so eager to manage Alejandro’s affairs, this agreement formally binds your personal assets, bank accounts, and legal liabilities to the estate as a co-guarantor."
Vanessa stared at the document. "Co-guarantor? What does that mean?"
"It means," Alejandro whispered, leaning closer to her face, "that if anyone tries to steal from my sons, or harm my family, everything they own—every diamond, every house, every cent—will be permanently liquidated and handed over to my children."

Vanessa swallowed hard, cold sweat breaking out across the back of her neck.
"Sign it, my love," Alejandro cooed sweetly, echoing her own voice. "Unless... there is something you aren't telling me?"
