Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Julian

The sun dipped behind the western hills of Mexico City, plunging the grand estate of Lomas de Chapultepec into deep, orange-tinted shadows.

Vanessa sat at her vanity table in the guest suite, her hands trembling as she applied a thick layer of red lipstick.

She had refused to sign Carlos Mendoza’s co-guarantor document earlier that morning, claiming she needed her own personal attorney to review the language. The sudden appearance of Alejandro’s corporate lawyer had thrown her timeline into complete chaos.

Her phone buzzed violently on the marble vanity.

She snatched it up, verifying the encrypted caller ID before pressing it to her ear.

"Julian!" she hissed into the receiver. "Where are you? Everything is going wrong! Alejandro’s lawyer showed up out of nowhere with co-guarantor papers!"

On the other end of the line, a slick, cold voice chuckled softly.

"Calm down, Vanessa," replied Julian Vance—a thirty-five-year-old disgraced former investment broker who had been blacklisted from the Mexican Financial Exchange for securities fraud two years ago. Julian was the mastermind behind the scheme, and Vanessa’s secret lover for over a year. "So Mendoza interrupted the signing. It changes nothing. The blind fool still doesn't suspect a thing."

"He's acting strange, Julian!" Vanessa whispered nervously, looking at the locked bedroom door. "He said things today... strange things about protecting his sons. And that damn nanny is still hovering around the boys!"

"Then we accelerate the timeline," Julian said coldly. "I'm already at your back gate. Let me in through the service entrance near the gardens. Once I'm inside, we'll execute Phase Two tonight."

Vanessa’s breath hitched. "Phase Two? Tonight? But the notary—"

"Forget the notary!" Julian snapped. "If we can't get him to sign the power of attorney peacefully, we use the medical contingency plan. I brought the digital authorization pad and the cardiac drops my contact in Switzerland provided. A few drops in his evening tea, his heart rate spikes, he suffers a 'fatal relapse' from his crash trauma, and as his legal fiancée living on the premises, you assume temporary emergency control of the estate assets automatically."

Vanessa gripped the edge of the vanity, her heart pounding. "A... a fatal relapse?"

"Do you want his sixty million dollars or not, Vanessa?" Julian sneered. "Or do you want to spend the rest of your life watching that blind cripple cuddle his bratty twins?"

Vanessa closed her eyes, her face hardening into a mask of pure, unadulterated ambition.

"The garden gate is unlocked," she whispered. "Come up the servant stairs."

Meanwhile, downstairs in the kitchen, the mansion was quiet.

Rosita was wrapping up small chicken sandwiches and chopping fresh apple slices for the boys' evening snack. Diego and Santiago were sitting in high chairs near the kitchen island, happily banging their plastic spoons against their wooden trays while Rosita sang softly to them.

"Here you go, my little angels," Rosita smiled, placing the fruit slices on their trays. "Eat your apples so you grow big and strong like your daddy."

Santiago giggled, reaching up with a sticky hand to touch Rosita’s cheek. Rosita leaned down and kissed his tiny forehead, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, unconditional love that made all of Vanessa’s cruelty feel bearable.

Suddenly, Rosita heard the quiet creak of the heavy wooden service door near the pantry.

She froze.

The service entrance was only used by maintenance staff during the day and was always locked by 6:00 p.m. It was now past 8:30 p.m.

Rosita gently patted Santiago’s head, whispered to the boys to stay quiet, and slipped her feet out of her shoes so her steps made no sound against the tile floor.

She tiptoed down the dimly lit pantry corridor.

Through the narrow glass panel of the service door, she saw Vanessa standing in the dark hallway near the back stairs.

And standing beside her was a tall man wearing a dark leather jacket, holding a small leather briefcase.

Rosita gasped softly, pressing her back against the pantry wall, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Is he in his room?" the man—Julian—asked in a hushed, sharp whisper.

"Yes," Vanessa replied, her voice trembling slightly. "He took his sleeping medication an hour ago. He's in the master bedroom."

Julian unzipped his leather briefcase, pulling out a small clear glass bottle with a blue dropper cap and a digital fingerprint scanner pad.

"This is Digital Sign-Pro," Julian whispered, holding up the device. "It captures biometric nerve impulses. Once he's sedated from the drops in his tea, we press his thumb against this pad. It automatically stamps his digital signature onto the offshore transfer deeds and the custody relinquishment forms for the Swiss academy."

"And the drops?" Vanessa asked, staring at the clear glass bottle. "How long does it take?"

"Twenty minutes after ingestion, his heart rate drops below forty beats per minute," Julian said with a chilling smirk. "By midnight, he goes into cardiac arrest. The doctors will assume his brain injury from the crash finally triggered a stroke. Clean. Traceless. Perfect."

Behind the pantry door, Rosita felt the room spin.

Poison.

They were going to murder Mr. Alejandro.

They were going to kill the father of her boys and send Diego and Santiago to a foreign country where no one would ever love them.

Tears of absolute horror filled Rosita’s eyes, but a sudden, fierce wave of courage flooded her veins. She reached into her apron pocket, pulling out her cheap, cracked smartphone.

Hands shaking violently, she turned on the video recorder, stepped slightly toward the door frame, and pointed the camera lens through the crack between the door and the wall.

The small green light on her phone screen illuminated: RECORDING 00:05... 00:10...

On the video feed, Julian’s face was crystal clear as he held up the glass bottle and explicitly detailed the dosage: "Three drops in his chamomile tea, Vanessa. Make sure he drinks every drop."

Suddenly, Rosita’s elbow brushed against a metal baking tray resting on the pantry shelf.

CLANG!

The tray crashed onto the tile floor with a deafening noise.

"Who's there?!" Julian shouted, his head snapping toward the pantry door.

Rosita stopped breathing. Without thinking, she shoved the phone deep inside her apron pocket, grabbed her phone's micro-SD storage card, ripped it out, and shoved the tiny plastic memory chip inside the lining of little Diego’s plush teddy bear resting on the pantry shelf!

A second later, the pantry door was kicked open with violent force.

Julian grabbed Rosita by her collar, slamming her violently against the brick wall!

"You filthy little rat!" Julian snarled, his fingers digging into her neck. "What were you doing behind that door?!"

Vanessa rushed into the pantry, her eyes wild with panic. "Julian! It's the nanny! Did she hear us?!"

"She was standing right there!" Julian spat, glaring at Rosita’s pale, gasping face. "Give me your phone, girl! Give it to me now or I'll break your arm!"

"I... I don't have anything!" Rosita choked out, struggling to breathe as Julian’s heavy hand compressed her throat. "I was... I was just getting napkins for the boys!"

Julian snatched Rosita’s smartphone from her apron pocket. He quickly unlocked it, saw the open camera app, and smashed the phone onto the concrete floor, stomping his heavy boot onto it until the screen shattered into a hundred pieces.

"The card!" Vanessa shrieked. "Check if she saved it to a memory card!"

Julian ripped open the back casing of the broken phone. "The SD slot is empty! She hid it!"

Julian raised his fist, his face contorted in psychotic rage. "Where is the card, you little bitch?! Tell me where it is or you won't leave this house alive!"

Rosita closed her eyes, squeezing them shut as she prepared for the blow. "Do what you want to me," she whispered through her bloodied lip. "You will never touch those boys."

Julian pulled his fist back to strike her face with full force.

"Is there a problem in my house?"

A voice, deeper than thunder, colder than arctic ice, echoed through the pantry.

Julian froze mid-strike.

Standing in the doorway of the pantry, wearing his black silk robe, was Alejandro.

He held his carbon-fiber cane in his right hand. His dark glasses covered his eyes.

"Alejandro!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice pitching up into frantic panic as she shoved Julian away from Rosita. "Alejandro! Thank God you're here! This... this intruder broke into the house through the garden gate! He was trying to rob us! Rosita was helping him!"

Julian quickly adjusted his jacket, trying to sound calm. "Yes! Exactly! I caught this maid handing your silver cutlery to me through the door! I was stopping her!"

Rosita lay on the floor, gasping for air, her neck bruised, looking up at Alejandro with desperate tears. "Mr. Alejandro... no... please listen to me..."

Alejandro stood in the doorway, completely unmoving.

Through his dark lenses, he looked at Julian’s face—recording every detail of his feature to memory. He looked at Vanessa’s pathetic, lying expression.

And then he looked down at Rosita, lying bruised and bleeding on the cold floor, holding her stomach to protect the memory card hidden in the teddy bear.

Alejandro’s soul burned with a fire so intense it nearly consumed his self-control right then and there.

"An intruder?" Alejandro asked slowly, his voice eerily quiet. "How strange. I didn't hear the alarm."

"He... he must have picked the lock, darling!" Vanessa lied frantically, grabbing Alejandro’s arm. "Call security! Have them take Rosita and this man away!"

Alejandro tilted his head slightly, his dark glasses focusing directly on Julian.

"Leave my property," Alejandro whispered to Julian. "Now. Before I have my private security team handle you personally."

Julian glared at Alejandro, then at Vanessa. Realizing he was outmaneuvered for the night, he grabbed his leather briefcase, turned on his heel, and sprinted out through the garden gate into the dark rain.

Vanessa let out a dramatic, breathy sigh of relief, slumping against Alejandro’s shoulder. "Oh, thank heaven you came down, my love! That was terrifying! I'll call the police right now to have Rosita arrested for conspiring with that burglar!"

Alejandro slowly raised his arm, placing his hand gently on Vanessa’s shoulder.

"No police tonight, Vanessa," Alejandro said softly, a dark, terrifying calmness settling over his features. "Tomorrow is our grand engagement gala. All the press, all our high-society friends, and my entire board of directors will be here."

He turned his head toward Rosita, who was slowly pulling herself up against the wall.

"Rosita will stay right here," Alejandro commanded. "She will care for my sons tonight. And tomorrow... at the gala..."

May you like

Alejandro smiled—a smile that made the blood in Vanessa’s veins run instantly cold.

"...everyone will finally see the truth."
