Chapter 1 - The Temperature of Silence

The kitchen at Bellanova’s was a sanctuary of heat and order, a stark contrast to the chaotic, cold humiliation Claire had just endured. The staff moved with practiced efficiency—clattering pots, the hiss of searing scallops, the shouting of orders. When Claire walked in, dripping soda, the noise didn’t stop, but the energy changed. It sucked the air right out of the room.

"Claire?" Her manager, a nervous man named Dave, scurried over, his face pale. "Oh god, Claire. Did you... did you spill something?"

"I didn't," she said, her voice eerily calm as she reached for a towel. "A customer did."

Claire didn't cry. She didn't have the luxury. She had learned long ago that tears were a currency she couldn't afford to spend on bullies. She wiped her face, her thoughts racing. She wasn't worried about the stain. She was thinking about Gabriel.

In the dining room, Madison Cole was already spinning the narrative. Through the swinging doors, Claire could hear the faint sound of laughter. Madison was narrating the "clumsy waitress" incident to her followers, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

Claire walked to the back, her heart hammering a rhythm of suppressed rage. She pulled out her phone. She didn't call the police. She didn't call her mother. She opened her messages, typed one line, and hit send.

I am at Bellanova’s. I need you.

She didn't need to explain further. Gabriel was always watching, always waiting. She untied her apron, dropping it into the bin. She wouldn’t go back out there. She wouldn’t be a prop for Madison’s ego. But she knew that for the first time in her life, she wouldn’t have to suffer in silence.
