Chapter 1 - The Cold Harbor Wind and the Marston HeirThe heavy wool of Adrian Marston’s coat smelled faintly of cedar, high-grade leather, and rain. Sitting on the stone planter with the bitter November wind whipping off the Port Mercy harbor, Emma Bennett pulled the fabric closer around her shoulders. Her hands were still trembling, not from the cold, but from the sudden, violent collapse of a life she had spent three years building on a foundation of sand.

Adrian stood before her, his tall frame blocking the worst of the harbor gusts. At forty-two, he possessed an imposing, carved-granite presence that made him a legend in the shipping empire his family controlled. While Cole was the charming, malleable younger brother who preferred high-end cocktails and society parties, Adrian was the anchor—quiet, relentless, and formidable.
“Why aren’t you going after him?” Emma asked again, her voice cracking slightly.
Adrian’s gaze was fixed on the grand revolving doors of the Harbor Crown Hotel. For a fleeting second, a muscle twitched along his jawline, a silent signal of the quiet fury brewing underneath his controlled exterior.
“Because going upstairs and breaking my brother’s jaw in a hotel corridor gives them a temporary satisfaction,” Adrian said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely steady. “It makes noise. Noise is messy. And the Marston family doesn't make noise when we clean house. We make structural changes.”
Emma looked up at him, her eyes wide, tears frozen on her eyelashes. “They humiliated me. Tessa stood there, wearing smudged lipstick, telling me he chose her. My own sister. Five months of planning a wedding, picking out flowers, tasting cake, and they were laughing behind my back.”
“They were,” Adrian agreed bluntly, refusing to offer hollow comfort or false platitudes. He crouched down so he was eye-level with her, his dark eyes piercing through her haze of shock. “And right now, Cole thinks he has won. He thinks he can trade you out like a defective luxury car, keep the social standing, inherit the family trust distribution next month, and walk away scot-free.”
“Next month?” Emma blinked. “The trust distribution?”
“Our grandfather’s will stipulates that primary beneficiaries must maintain unblemished moral and professional standing to inherit the full commercial portfolio,” Adrian explained, rising slowly to his feet. He extended a large, steady hand toward her. “Cole assumed that getting married or keeping his engagement status flexible would satisfy the trustees. He didn't realize that family misconduct clauses apply to broken contracts, public scandals, and fraudulent asset entanglement.”
Emma looked at his outstretched hand. The contrast between her shattered world inside the hotel and the cold, calculated logic of the man standing before her was stark. Yet, for the first time in an hour, the panic in her chest receded just a fraction, replaced by a cold, sharp spike of adrenaline.
“What are you saying, Adrian?” she asked, placing her cold hand in his warm, firm grip as he pulled her effortlessly to her feet.
“I am saying your wedding is canceled, Emma,” Adrian said, turning her toward his idling black sedan where the driver held the rear door open. “But your life isn't over. In fact, it’s about to get very interesting for Cole and Tessa. Get in the car.”
Emma hesitated for a fraction of a second, glancing back at the hotel entrance. Then, images of the last five months flashed through her mind—Tessa smiling while fitting her veil, Cole holding her hand in the emergency room while texting her sister behind her back.
She lifted her chin, let out a slow breath, and slid into the leather interior of the sedan.

Adrian climbed in beside her, closing the heavy door against the harbor wind. He didn't look at her with pity. He looked at her with an appraisal that felt dangerously like respect.
“Drive to the maritime office,” Adrian instructed the chauffeur, before turning his full attention back to Emma. “And Emma? Let’s talk about your wedding registry, your seating charts, and the little financial portfolio Cole thinks he’s going to walk away with.”
