Chapter 5 - Unraveling the WebBy Monday morning, the fallout had swept through Port Mercy’s high society like a wildfire.

The social pages that were supposed to be filled with pictures of Emma Bennett walking down the aisle in custom lace instead featured breaking financial bulletins: Marston Shipping Subsidiary Investigated for Internal Embezzlement; Cole Marston Stripped of Executive Title.

Inside Tessa’s boutique downtown, the reality of their destruction was hitting home with brutal speed.

The glass storefront was locked. Inside, boxes of inventory sat half-packed as commercial eviction notices were plastered across the front window. Tessa stood in the center of the boutique, her phone pressed frantically to her ear for the tenth time that morning.

“Voicemail again,” Tessa hissed, slamming her phone down onto the cash wrap counter.

The bell above the front door jingled. Tessa whipped around, expecting a lawyer or a landlord.

Instead, Emma stepped into the boutique.

She wore a tailored camel-coat, her dark hair pinned back elegantly, carrying herself with an effortless grace that made Tessa look like a frightened schoolgirl playing dress-up.

“What are you doing here?” Tessa snapped, crossing her arms defensively. “Come to gloat? Come to see what it feels like to have everything taken away?”

Emma stopped a few feet away, looking around the cluttered, half-empty shop with mild, detached interest.

“I didn't come to gloat, Tessa,” Emma said calmly. “I came to collect.”

“Collect what? We don't have anything! Your precious golden-boy ex-fiancée is sitting in a cheap downtown motel because Adrian froze his personal accounts and locked him out of his trust funds!” Tessa shouted, her voice cracking with hysteria. “You ruined us!”

“No, Tessa,” Emma corrected softly. “You and Cole ruined yourselves the moment you decided that other people’s lives, savings, and trust were disposable currency for your amusement.”

Emma pulled a single manila envelope from her designer tote bag and placed it neatly on the glass counter.

“What is that?” Tessa eyed it suspiciously.

“That is a formal notice from Marston Legal. Since your boutique lease was guaranteed by the fraudulent corporate line of credit Cole opened under my firm’s name, my legal team has successfully filed a lien against all remaining inventory and intellectual property associated with this business.”

Tessa’s face turned white. “You can’t do that! That’s my livelihood!”

“It was never your livelihood,” Emma said, turning toward the door. “It was a front. And by tomorrow afternoon, this space will be repossessed by commercial real estate.”

As Emma reached the door, Tessa lunged forward, her voice desperate. “Wait! Emma, please! Cole lied to me! He told me you two were already over, that you were just staying together for social appearance! He manipulated me!”

Emma stopped with her hand on the brass handle. She didn't turn around.

“You told me in the hotel room that he chose you,” Emma said quietly. “I hope you enjoy the prize.”

Then she pushed open the door and stepped out into the crisp autumn air, leaving Tessa alone in the wreckage of her own ambition.
