Chapter 4 - The Boardroom ConfrontationCole remained frozen near the doorway, his eyes darting frantically around the room. The cold, assessing stares of the board members felt like physical weight pressing down on his shoulders.

“I asked you a question, Adrian,” Cole forced out, trying to inject a tone of defensive authority into his voice. “Why is Emma here? This is a family business matter.”

“Emma is here because her signature, her architectural firm, and her personal credit profile were utilized without her consent to secure unauthorized corporate loans totaling four hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” Adrian stated flatly. He opened the manila folder and slid a single piece of paper across the polished mahogany table.

Cole’s face drained of color. He didn't move toward the paper.

“That’s… that’s an administrative error,” Cole stammered, panic finally cracking his polished veneer. “We were getting married! Finances get merged during pre-marital planning. It was a clerical oversight by the lending department.”

“Clerical oversight?” Marcus Vance chimed in, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Mr. Marston, the loan documents bear an electronic authentication stamp routed through a private IP address assigned to a residential apartment on Maple Street—which, according to our records, is leased exclusively by Ms. Tessa Cole.”

The room dropped another ten degrees.

Emma finally spoke. Her voice was crystal clear, devoid of the trembling shock from the hotel room the afternoon before.

“You didn't just merge finances, Cole,” Emma said, looking directly into his terrified eyes. “You opened a shadow line of credit under my design firm’s name to fund your sister’s boutique expansion, while simultaneously telling me you were paying for our wedding catering out of pocket.”

Cole turned frantically toward Adrian. “Adrian, you can’t let them do this! She’s vindictive because we broke off the engagement yesterday! She’s trying to sabotage me before the trust distribution!”

Adrian slowly stood up. At six-foot-two, with his broad shoulders and commanding presence, he towered over his younger brother. He walked around the table until he stopped just two feet away from Cole.

“Yesterday, you stood in a hotel room with your mistress, laughing about how you were going to marry Emma and figure out what to do with her later,” Adrian said quietly, his voice dangerously low. “You thought you were playing a game of social manipulation.”

Cole swallowed hard, beads of sweat forming along his hairline. “How… how do you know what happened in the hotel room?”

“Because,” Adrian replied, resting his hands casually on the back of an empty chair, “the hotel is owned by Marston Holdings. The security cameras in the penthouse lobby are monitored directly from this building. And more importantly, Tessa’s boutique lease is guaranteed by a secondary Marston trust that I control.”

Adrian leaned in close, his dark eyes boring into Cole’s soul.

“You are not getting your trust distribution next month, Cole. In fact, by noon today, your corporate signing authority will be revoked, your company credit cards will be deactivated, and your name will be permanently removed from every familial asset associated with the Marston name.”

“You can’t do that!” Cole shouted, desperation finally breaking his composure as he lunged forward. “You’re destroying my life over a personal dispute!”

“It’s not a personal dispute,” Adrian corrected coldly, straightening his jacket. “It’s a corporate audit. And as chairman of the board, I have a fiduciary duty to prosecute corporate fraud to the fullest extent of the law.”

He gestured toward the double doors. Two security guards stepped inside, flanking the entrance.

“Escort Mr. Marston out of the building,” Adrian commanded. “And ensure his personal belongings from his office are boxed and left on the curb by sunset.”
