Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Empire's LedgerThe executive suite on the top floor of Marston Shipping & Logistics felt like a command bunker. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the dark, churning waters of Port Mercy harbor, where container ships moved silently against the night tide.

Emma sat in a high-backed leather chair, holding a steaming mug of black coffee Adrian had insisted she drink. Across the wide mahogany desk, Adrian sat behind dual monitors, his fingers moving rapidly across a wireless keyboard.

“You haven’t touched your coffee,” Adrian noted without looking up.

“I’m trying to process the fact that three hours ago I was arguing with a florist about white roses,” Emma replied, her voice steady now, though her hands still wrapped tightly around the warm ceramic mug.

Adrian paused, looking up. The harsh overhead lighting caught the sharp angles of his face. “Florists are simple. Family betrayal is complicated. But corporate restructuring? That’s just math.”

“Math?”

“Cole has been borrowing against his future trust disbursement to fund his lifestyle and Tessa’s boutique,” Adrian said, spinning one of the monitors toward her. “Look at this wire transfer from four months ago. Six figures, routed through a shell company registered under a residential address in Boston.”

Emma leaned forward, her eyes scanning the financial lines. As a former corporate analyst before she transitioned into architectural design consulting, financial ledgers were second nature to her. Her breath hitched.

“This isn't just personal,” Emma whispered. “This is company embezzlement. He used logistics subsidiary funds to cover private debt.”

“Precisely,” Adrian murmured, leaning back and resting his chin on his steepled fingers. “When Cole asked our board for an early liquidity release last month, he claimed it was for wedding expenses and property acquisition. He used your name as co-signatory on the preliminary loan applications.”

Emma froze. Her mug clattered softly against the desk. “My name? I never signed anything like that.”

“He didn't need your physical signature for the preliminary drafts; he used the documents from your shared architectural firm account, forging your authorization based on your upcoming marriage status,” Adrian said coldly. “Which means, legally, if the audit goes public without intervention, your name is tied directly to a federal wire fraud investigation.”

The blood drained from Emma’s face. The betrayal in the hotel room suddenly felt like a minor paper cut compared to the legal executioner’s axe hanging over her head.

“He was setting me up,” she whispered, the horror dawning in her chest. “If the wedding fell apart, or if the fraud was discovered, I would take the fall as his financial partner.”

“He’s lazy, and he’s arrogant, but he’s not smart enough to plan something that sophisticated alone,” Adrian noted, his eyes narrowing. “Tessa helped him. Her boutique has been laundering small-sum operational losses through fake catering invoices for the past five months.”

Emma stared at the screen, watching the digital trails intertwine like spiderwebs. For three years, she had believed Cole was charming, harmless, and deeply in love with her. She had excused his late nights at the office, his frequent business trips, and his growing detachment.

She stood up abruptly, walking to the massive glass window to look out at the harbor lights.

“I want them destroyed, Adrian,” she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, lethal cadence that surprised even herself. “I don't want a tearful apology. I don't want a messy public scandal that drags my name through the mud. I want them legally dismantled, financially ruined, and stripped of every single privilege they take for granted.”

Adrian stood up slowly, walking over to stand beside her at the glass. The reflection showed two people united by a singular, unyielding resolve.

“That,” Adrian said quietly, “is the most rational thing you’ve said all evening. Fortunately for you, I happen to control the board votes, the legal team, and the physical assets they’re standing on.”

He turned to face her, his expression unreadable.

“Here is what we are going to do. We don't announce the wedding is off tonight. We let them sleep in that hotel suite, basking in their little victory. Tomorrow morning, at precisely nine o'clock, the trustees are holding an emergency financial review. And we are going to walk through those double doors together.”
