Chapter 2 - The Broker’s Nightmare

In a glossy, high-end real estate office in downtown Denver, Victor Pike leaned back in a plush leather chair, a smug grin plastered across his face. He adjusted the collar of his expensive, brand-new shirt—purchased on a credit card he fully intended to pay off as soon as the cabin's funds cleared.

"It’s a simple transaction, Richard," Victor said, waving a hand dismissively at the broker sitting across from him. "The property belonged to my wife's late husband. We’ve held onto it for ten years, and frankly, it’s just sitting there gathering dust. We have better uses for the capital. A nice family trip to Maui, college tuition for Brianna... you know how it is."

Richard Vance, a veteran real estate broker who prided himself on smooth transactions, smiled politely as he clicked through the final closing documents on his dual-monitor setup. "Of course, Mr. Pike. The buyers are incredibly excited about the acreage. The funds are already sitting in escrow, waiting for the final title clearance. Let me just run the automated deed validation through the state land registry, and we can wire the initial deposit of $450,000 to your account."

Victor’s eyes gleamed. He could already taste the mai tais on the beach. He looked over at his wife, Miriam, who sat beside him, nervously clutching her designer purse. "See, honey? I told you Elena wouldn't be a problem. She's stuck in Texas playing soldier. What is she going to do? Fly up here and stop us?"

Miriam swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "I just... I hope she doesn't make a scene later. But Victor is right, we had to do this."

Richard Vance pressed the enter key to finalize the deed transfer. "Alright, running the automated state title check now... It should take about ten seconds."

The digital progress bar on Richard’s screen crept forward.

10%... 30%... 50%...

Suddenly, the screen didn't turn green with a confirmation code. Instead, a bright, flashing red banner erupted across both monitors. A harsh, high-pitched alarm sounded from the office’s internal compliance system.

Richard blinked, his smile faltering. "That’s strange. The registry just kicked back a Level-1 secure lock."

"What does that mean?" Victor asked, his grin faltering slightly. "Just a system glitch, right? Push it through manually."

"I can't," Richard whispered, his face losing its color as he stared at the screen. The text on the monitor was rapidly rewriting itself in encrypted security protocols. "The system says... the property is flagged under a 'Military Citadel Trust.' It's an automated federal block. W-wait... whose name is on this hidden deed?!"

Before Victor could speak, Richard’s office phone rang. The caller ID read: U.S. DISTRICT COURT - DIVISION OF LAND AND FRAUD PREVENTION.

With a trembling hand, Richard hit the speakerphone.

"Vance Real Estate, Richard speaking..."

"Mr. Vance," a voice like broken glass echoed through the room. It was Sloane Mercer. "This is Sloane Mercer, counsel representing Captain Elena Calder and the estate of Marcus Calder. I suggest you freeze your screen immediately. The quitclaim deed filed by Victor Pike is a forged document. The primary title of that property was placed in an active-duty military protection trust ten years ago. Any attempt to sell, transfer, or encumber that land without Captain Calder's biometric signature constitutes federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and a direct violation of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act."

Victor leapt out of his chair, his face turning a deep, angry purple. "Who the hell is this?! That shack belongs to my wife! We have every right to sell it!"

"Mr. Pike," Sloane’s voice was deadly calm. "I suggest you look out the window. Because while you were busy planning your vacation to Hawaii, the local sheriff's department was dispatched to your location. You aren't going to Maui, Victor. You're going to a federal holding cell."
