Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards
The fallout for the Pike-Calder family was total.
With his bank accounts frozen and his business exposed as a shell company used to hide massive debts, Victor Pike was unable to post bail. He sat in a county jail cell, awaiting trial on charges of grand larceny, forgery, and federal wire fraud. The dream of Maui had evaporated, replaced by the grim reality of a projected ten-to-fifteen-year prison sentence.
Miriam Calder-Pike was forced to sell the suburban house she had prized so highly just to pay off the creditors Victor had left behind. She moved into a tiny, one-bedroom apartment on the edge of the city, her pride completely shattered. She had sacrificed her daughter's love, her late husband's memory, and her own dignity for a man who had left her with nothing but debts and a broken name.
Brianna, realizing her stepfather's empty promises of a fully funded college education were a lie, had to take out student loans and find a part-time job just to attend a local community college. The illusion of high-society living was gone.
A week before Elena was scheduled to return to her unit in Texas, she received a letter in the mail. It was from her mother.
Elena,
I don't expect you to forgive me. I realize now that I let Victor blind me to what was truly important. I was so afraid of being alone, of being poor, that I let him take everything your father built. I am sorry. I hope one day you can look at me as your mother again, and not just as the woman who failed you.

Elena read the letter standing on the porch of the cabin. She didn't cry. She didn't feel anger anymore. She simply felt a quiet, profound sense of closure. She folded the letter, slipped it into her pocket, and walked inside.
The fireplace was crackling warmly, casting a soft, golden light over the cedar-log walls of the living room. On the mantle, right above the hearth, stood the polished oak display case. Inside, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart rested securely, right where they belonged.
