Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary Restored

The following morning, Elena walked through the woods surrounding the cabin. The autumn leaves crunched softly beneath her boots, and the cool mountain wind carried the clean scent of pine. She stopped by a massive, ancient oak tree where her father had once carved their initials into the bark when she was a little girl.
She touched the rough wood, her fingers tracing the faded letters: M.C. + E.C.
"We kept it safe, Dad," she whispered to the quiet forest. "The walls are still standing."
She heard a soft footstep behind her and turned to see Sloane Mercer walking up the path, holding two mugs of steaming coffee.
"The transport is scheduled for tomorrow morning, Elena," Sloane said, handing her a mug. "The military flight will take you straight back to Fort Bliss. The cabin's security system is fully integrated with your military encrypted network. If anyone so much as steps onto the gravel path, you'll get a direct alert on your terminal."
Elena took a sip of the warm coffee, looking up at the towering mountains that shielded the valley. "Thank you, Sloane. For everything."
"You did the hard work, Elena," Sloane said, looking at her with deep respect. "Your father built a fortress, but you were the one who had the courage to defend it."
Elena smiled—a genuine, warm smile that had been absent for weeks. She looked back at the cabin, its sturdy wooden structure standing proud against the mountain backdrop. It was no longer a place of conflict, but a true sanctuary, restored and protected for generations to come.

As the sun began to dip behind the snow-capped peaks, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow across the sky, Elena Calder knew that no matter where the Army sent her, she would always have a place to come home to.
The storm had passed, and the sanctuary was finally at peace.
