Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Fort Bliss

Back at Fort Bliss, the desert sun had fully risen, casting long, stark shadows across the gravel-paved base. Elena walked out of the operations tent, her phone vibrating against her thigh. She pulled it out and saw her mother’s contact name flashing.

She answered, keeping her voice completely level. "Hello, Mom."

"Elena!" Miriam’s voice was shrill, laced with a panic that bordered on hysteria. "What have you done?! There are police officers at our house! Victor is being questioned! They’re saying he committed fraud! How could you do this to your own family? To your sister Brianna?"

"Family?" Elena walked toward a quiet corner near the perimeter fence, watching a hawk circle high above the desert scrub. "Family doesn't steal, Mom. Family doesn't forge a dead man's signature to fund a vacation while throwing his military medals in the garbage."

"It was just a cabin, Elena!" Miriam cried. "Your father has been gone for ten years! We needed the money! Victor’s business was failing, and we were drowning in debt. Why do you care about some old wood in the mountains? You're never even there!"

"It wasn't just a cabin to Dad, and it isn't just a cabin to me," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it made Miriam stop speaking. "Dad spent three years building that place so I would always have a home, no matter where the Army sent me. He knew exactly what Victor was. That’s why he put the deed in a Citadel Trust. He set the trap, Mom. Victor was just greedy enough to walk right into it."

"You're destroying us," Miriam whispered, her voice cracking. "If Victor goes to jail, we lose everything. The house, the cars... Brianna won't be able to go to college."

"Victor destroyed you the moment he decided that stealing from my father was an acceptable solution to his debts," Elena replied. "And you let him. You signed those papers too, didn't you, Mom?"

Miriam went dead silent.

"Sloane has the forensic document examiners analyzing the signatures on the forged quitclaim deed," Elena continued calmly. "If your handwriting is on those papers, Mom, the district attorney is going to charge you as an accessory to grand larceny. I suggest you get a very good lawyer. But don't use Victor's. He won't be needing one where he's going."

"Elena, please..." Miriam begged, her voice sounding small, defeated, and entirely broken. "We're your family..."

"My father was my family," Elena said. "And I protect my own."

She hung up the phone, her hand perfectly steady. As she turned back toward the main operations building, she saw her commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Vance, standing near the entrance, holding a clipboard. He had been watching her from a distance.

"Everything alright, Captain Calder?" the commander asked, his eyes scanning her face.

Elena stood at attention, saluting cleanly. "Yes, sir. Just executing a defensive containment protocol, sir."

The commander smiled, returning the salute. "Carry on, Captain. Don't let the civilian world breach our perimeter."

"Never, sir."
