Chapter 1 - The Architect of DeceptionThe silence in Aunt Margaret’s study was heavy, filled with the scent of old paper and the metallic tang of deceit. Margaret didn't look like a villain; she looked like a woman who had spent decades meticulously pruning a garden to ensure only her chosen flowers grew.

"The fortune you enjoy, Adrian," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, silky register, "isn't merely money. It is the price of a life lived in shadows. Your mother, Lillian, was an obstacle. She was a woman who believed in morality, a woman who would have thrown away everything your father built because she couldn't stomach the origin of those riches."
"She was my mother," I roared, my hands gripping the edge of the mahogany desk. "You told me she died in a fire, in a car crash—you gave me a hundred versions of a funeral that never happened!"

"She was declared legally dead," Margaret replied, her eyes devoid of remorse. "Your father was a man of great ambition, Adrian. When Lillian threatened to go to the authorities about the shell companies and the illegal land grabs, he didn't kill her. He did something much more elegant. He erased her. He placed her in a facility where her mind would be broken by isolation, and he kept her there for forty years, paying for her 'care' with the very money she had tried to stop him from earning."
I looked at the locket on the table. My father—a man I had been taught to worship as a titan of industry—had been a jailer. And Margaret, my mentor, my confidante, had been his silent partner in crime.
