Chapter 1 - The Secret in the BathroomThe locked bathroom door muffled the distant sound of heels clicking down the hallway, but the tension inside the room was thick enough to cut with a scalpel. Maya stared down at Richard Vance’s right foot as it slowly flexed, the muscles shifting with deliberate, controlled precision under the fabric of his trousers. The man who was supposedly wheelchair-bound,

"You're not paralyzed," Maya whispered, her breath catching in her throat as she gripped the edge of the marble sink.
"Keep your voice down," Richard murmured back, his tone steady, carrying the commanding cadence of a corporate chief executive used to making high-stakes decisions under fire. "If anyone in this house hears us, we are both in immediate danger."
Richard gripped the armrests of his specialized wheelchair, his knuckles turning white. With a slow, calculated effort, he pushed his weight upward and stood—actually stood—straight and tall for the first time in nearly a year. He leaned against the vanity for support, wincing slightly from muscle stiffness, but the movement was entirely self-generated.
"Why?" Maya asked, her mind racing back to the cold parting words of her ex-mother-in-law, Ofelia, and the betrayal of her ex-husband, Miguel. She knew what it felt like to be discarded, lied to, and gaslit by people who claimed to love you. But this was on a completely different scale. "Why fake a permanent disability? Your family—Ethan, Chloe, your mother—they treat you like an invalid. They control your board meetings, your phone calls, your life."
"Because someone tried to kill me eight months ago, Maya," Richard said quietly, his gray eyes fixing on hers with raw intensity. "The car crash wasn't an accident. The brakes were severed. When I survived the initial impact and woke up in the hospital, the doctors told me my recovery prospects were uncertain. But within three weeks, sensation started returning to my legs. Before I could tell anyone, my brother Ethan and his wife Chloe brought me home... and my mother placed a personal private nurse by my bedside. A nurse who began dosing my evening tea with neuro-suppressants to keep my limbs numb and my mind sluggish."
Maya’s blood ran cold. She remembered the clinical charts she had reviewed during her orientation, the endless prescriptions, and the tight grip Ethan held over Richard’s medical updates.
"You stayed in the chair to draw them out," Maya realized, her analytical mind immediately kicking into gear, drawing on her years of caring for her father and managing complex environments.
"I stayed because it was the only way to watch them systematically dismantle my company from the inside, believing I was entirely helpless," Richard replied. "I needed someone loyal, someone observant, someone who knew how to care for a patient without being part of their corporate or social inner circle. I checked your background, Maya. You gave up your life to care for your father. You are resilient. And right now, you are the only person in this world I can trust."

Before Maya could respond, a sharp, heavy knock rattled the bathroom door.
"Richard? Maya?" Ethan’s voice cut through the wood, laced with sharp suspicion. "Why is the door locked? Open up immediately."
