Chapter 3 - The Midnight AuditThe grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer struck 2:00 AM. The grand Winnetka estate was shrouded in deep, heavy silence, save for the faint hum of the central HVAC system and the distant rustle of autumn leaves against the reinforced glass windows.

Maya tiptoed out of her private quarters on the ground floor, wearing soft-soled shoes and a dark cardigan. Richard had provided her with a master security override code earlier that evening during their covert debriefing. Her objective: access the private study on the second floor, locate the physical corporate seal and original shareholder certificates, and extract the hidden digital ledger files from Richard’s secure desktop server before the morning board meeting.
As she reached the second-floor landing, a streak of light cut across the dark corridor from beneath the study door.
Maya froze, pressing her back flat against the mahogany-paneled wall.
Inside the study, voices murmured in tense, heated whispers. She crept closer, peering through a hairline crack in the heavy double doors.
Ethan and Chloe stood beside the massive oak desk. Resting on the surface was a sleek silver laptop and a stack of legal binding agreements bearing the corporate letterhead of Vance Healthcare.
"Are you certain the signature forgery will pass compliance review?" Chloe asked, her voice tight with nervous anxiety. "If the independent auditors look too closely at the proxy transfer records—"
"The independent auditors answer to the board, and our mother controls three of the five voting seats," Ethan scoffed, pouring himself a finger of scotch from the crystal decanter. "Once Richard signs the proxy under the guise of 'medical incapacity,' he becomes a permanent figurehead with zero legal recourse. By tomorrow afternoon, Vance Healthcare is ours, and we can quietly transition the offshore R&D accounts into our private holding entities."
Chloe let out a breath of relief, smiling sharply. "And the nurse? Is she still dosing his evening tea?"
"Of course," Ethan smirked. "Though I noticed she looked a bit unsettled tonight. If she starts asking too many questions, mother will simply dismiss her with a severance package and a non-disclosure agreement, just like the last three caregivers."
Maya’s hands curled into tight fists in her pockets. They weren't just stealing a company; they were systematically poisoning a man in his own home to cover up their corporate theft.
She waited until Ethan and Chloe gathered their files and exited through the opposite side of the study toward the master wing. Once the hallway was clear, Maya slipped inside like a shadow.
She bypassed the decoy computer setup, located the secondary physical floor safe hidden behind an oil painting of Richard’s late father, and punched in the twelve-digit biometric override sequence Richard had given her.

The heavy steel door swung open silently. Inside lay the original corporate charter, notarized medical affidavits proving Richard’s neurological recovery had begun months ago, and a flash drive containing encrypted audio recordings of Ethan and Chloe discussing the tampered brakes on Richard’s car.
Maya slipped the flash drive into her pocket, secured the safe, and disappeared back into the darkness of the hallway just as the first pale light of dawn began to bleed over Lake Michigan.
