Chapter 2 - The Art of DeceptionInside the bathroom, time compressed into a razor-sharp instant. Richard didn't panic; his eyes flashed with cold tactical precision. With a swift, practiced motion, he lowered himself back into the motorized wheelchair, arranged his legs at the exact awkward angle he had maintained for months, and grabbed a small hand towel to dab his brow.

"Unlock it," Richard whispered sharply, nodding toward the deadbolt.
Maya took a steadying breath, schooling her features into a mask of calm professionalism. She reached out, clicked the deadbolt open, and pulled the door inward.
Standing in the hallway was Ethan Vance, his tailored designer suit immaculate, his eyes darting past Maya immediately to fix on his brother. Beside him stood Chloe, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, tapping a manicured nail against her elbow.
"Why was the door locked, Maya?" Ethan demanded, his voice carrying an underlying tone of condescension and paranoia. "Protocol explicitly states that Richard is a high-fall-risk patient. He is not to be left behind locked barriers during hygienic routines."
"Mr. Vance slipped slightly while I was adjusting the water temperature," Maya replied smoothly, her voice betraying no hint of anxiety. She had spent years smoothing over conflicts for Miguel and handling high-stress administrative crises; lying to protect a secret was suddenly second nature. "He panicked, grabbed the privacy lock out of reflex, and asked me to secure it so he wouldn't fall forward. It’s entirely my fault for startling him."
Richard looked up, playing his part with subtle, exhausted frailty. "She's telling the truth, Ethan. I didn't want to admit I lost my balance. Leave her alone; she’s just doing her job."
Chloe narrowed her eyes, stepping closer and peering into the bathroom as if searching for wet footprints or displaced items. "You've only been here twelve hours, Maya. Don't think you can start altering safety protocols just because you feel like it. Eleanor wants to see Richard in the study immediately. There's a board proxy vote coming up tomorrow, and Richard needs to sign off on the emergency restructuring documents."
"I'll be down in five minutes," Richard said quietly, offering a weak, vacant nod that completely masked the sharp, calculating intellect burning beneath the surface.
Ethan and Chloe lingered for a moment longer, exchanging a sharp, cold glance before finally turning and walking down the dimly lit corridor toward the grand staircase.

As their footsteps faded away, Richard looked up at Maya. A ghost of a grim smile touched his lips. "You handled that brilliantly. But tomorrow morning, the real storm begins. The emergency restructuring vote they're pushing for will strip me of my voting shares and hand complete control of Vance Healthcare over to Ethan."
"Not if we change the rules of the game first," Maya replied quietly, her eyes locking onto his. "Tell me what you need me to do."
