Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushBy 10:00 AM, the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Vance Healthcare tower downtown was packed to capacity. The twelve members of the board of directors sat around the polished glass table, murmuring nervously among themselves. At the head of the table sat Eleanor Vance, Richard’s cold, imperious mother, flanked by Ethan and Chloe, who wore expressions of triumphant, unearned confidence.

The double doors opened, and Maya wheeled Richard into the room.

Richard looked pale, composed, and frail—maintaining his calculated facade down to the slight tremor in his left hand. Maya stood quietly behind his wheelchair, holding a slim leather portfolio against her chest.

Eleanor adjusted her diamond-encrusted spectacles, looking down her nose at her eldest son with undisguised disdain. "Thank you for joining us, Richard. I know travel and board protocols are difficult for someone in your... delicate condition. But as you know, we are here today to formalize the emergency executive transfer of voting rights to Ethan, ensuring the stability of Vance Healthcare during your prolonged recovery."

Ethan stood up, flashing a charismatic, practiced smile to the board members. "We all want what's best for Richard. Burdening him with daily corporate governance while he fights to regain his health is simply inhumane. I am prepared to step in as interim CEO immediately."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through several board members who had been quietly bought or manipulated by Ethan over the past eight months.

"Are there any objections?" Eleanor asked, casting a cold, commanding gaze around the room. "If not, we can proceed to sign the proxy transfer documents."

"I object," a calm, clear voice cut across the silence.

Every head turned. It wasn't Richard who had spoken. It was Maya.

Ethan scoffed, his face flushing with immediate rage. "Who invited the domestic help into a closed executive board meeting? Security, remove this woman immediately!"

"Sit down, Ethan," a voice echoed through the room.

It wasn't a weak, trembling whisper. It was deep, resonant, and dripping with absolute authority.

Richard Vance slowly pushed himself upright against the armrests of his wheelchair. Before anyone could react, he stepped clear of the footrests, standing completely unaided on his own two feet at the head of the boardroom table.

Silence descended on the room so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.

Eleanor dropped her pen. Ethan staggered back against the glass wall, his face turning the color of chalk. Chloe let out a sharp, horrified gasp.

"The meeting," Richard said, his gray eyes locking onto his mother and brother with terrifying intensity, "is about to take a very different direction."
