Chapter 1 - The Midnight Betrayal

The emergency room doors swung shut behind Grant Holloway as he vanished down the fluorescent-lit corridor, leaving behind an economic desert and a wife facing emergency surgery alone. Inside the maternal ICU, the sharp, rhythmic shriek of the fetal monitor drowned out the howling Chicago wind outside.

Dr. Keller pressed down hard on Claire's abdomen with the ultrasound probe, his expression grim. "Baby A’s heart rate is dropping dangerously. We have to go to the OR right now."

Nurse Megan Price gripped Claire’s trembling hand. "Look at me, Claire. Focus on my voice. We are going to get your babies out safely. You're strong enough for this."

As the gurney rushed down the corridor toward the operating suite, the financial reality of Grant’s abandonment struck harder than the contractions. When Claire had tried to access her phone to call her accountant, a system notification flashed: Account frozen. Grant had executed his financial coup with the clinical precision of a Wall Street raider, locking her out of their joint funds, her personal savings, and her health insurance portal just minutes before she rolled into surgery.

Under the blinding white lights of the operating theater, as the anesthesiologist placed the mask over her face, Claire made a silent promise: If she and her children survived this night, Grant Holloway would find out that true wealth wasn't measured in corporate shares, and a wife discarded on an operating table was the most dangerous enemy a billionaire could make.
