Chapter 3 - The Alliance

Julian opened the manila folder, revealing documents that made Claire’s breath catch.
"Your husband’s upcoming Vanguard merger is built on a house of cards," Julian explained, pulling out a series of financial ledgers and architectural disclosures. "To satisfy the Vanguard board on Monday, Grant had to falsify the zoning compliance reports for the new Evanston logistics park—reports that you personally drafted and filed before you were sidelined by high-risk pregnancy complications."
Claire stared at the papers. "He used my filings... but altered the environmental liability clauses."
"Precisely," Julian nodded. "He shifted forty million dollars in toxic waste liabilities onto a shell company registered under your name. If the merger goes through on Monday morning, Vanguard will assume the debt, and the SEC will come looking for you, not him."
The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Grant hadn't just divorced her to protect his portfolio from medical bills; he had framed her as the fall guy for corporate fraud so he could walk away clean from the Vanguard merger.
"He planned this weeks ago," Claire whispered, hot tears spilling over her lashes. "The separation agreement wasn't just a divorce. It was a confession."
Julian stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unwavering resolve. "Holloway thinks he has won because he owns the lawyers and the bank accounts. But he forgot one fundamental rule of business, Claire: never back an intelligent woman into a corner when she has nothing left to lose."
Julian slid a golden fountain pen across the bedside tray, right beside the blank contract Grant had left behind.

"What is this?" Claire asked.
"My legal team has prepared a counter-merger injunction, a full asset-freeze order on Holloway Urban Systems, and a proxy takeover filing utilizing your voting shares as a co-founder," Julian said softly. "Sign your name, Claire. Let's show your husband what happens when a billion-dollar empire collapses from the inside out."
