Chapter 2 - The Rival at the Door

At 4:45 a.m., the twins—a boy and a girl—were delivered via emergency cesarean section. They were tiny, fragile, and immediately whisked away to the neonatal intensive care unit. Claire woke up hours later in a recovery room, weak, shivering, and entirely alone. The nurse handed her a chart showing stable vital signs for the infants, but the financial lockout remained absolute.
Around noon, heavy, measured footsteps echoed outside her private recovery room.
The door opened slowly. A tall, impeccably tailored man stepped inside. He wore a dark wool overcoat, silver threads peppered his temples, and his dark eyes carried an intensity that could silence a boardroom.
It was Julian Vance.
Julian Vance was the ruthless real estate tycoon and shipping magnate whom Grant Holloway had spent the last five years trying to destroy in municipal zoning battles and commercial acquisitions. He was Holloway’s most feared business rival—and the last man on earth Claire expected to see standing by her hospital bed.
Julian looked down at the empty chair where Grant should have been, then at Claire’s pale, exhausted face.
"I was in the lobby reviewing property titles for the West Side development," Julian said, his voice a deep, steady baritone. "When my security detail informed me that Holloway’s legal team had just frozen a maternity ward account, I assumed there must be a mistake. It seems I underestimated your husband's capacity for cruelty."

Claire pulled her hospital blanket higher, her voice raspy. "Why are you here, Mr. Vance? Are you here to gloat about Grant's latest corporate victory?"
"I don't gloat over collateral damage," Julian replied quietly. He pulled a thick manila folder from his briefcase and placed it gently on the bedside table. "And I certainly don't ignore a man who leaves his wife and newborn twins to starve while he tries to push through a fraudulent merger."
