Chapter 6 - A New Horizon

Six months later, the bitter Chicago winter had given way to a brilliant, sunlit summer.
The newly restructured corporation—now officially renamed Holloway-Vance Logistics—thrived under joint executive leadership. The toxic waste liabilities had been legally traced back to the offshore shell accounts Grant had set up in a desperate attempt to frame his wife, sealing his prison sentence for a minimum of twelve years.
The two-story brick house on Throop Street had been fully renovated, filled with the bright, chaotic laughter of two healthy, thriving infants who had beaten every medical odd against them.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Claire sat on the terrace of her newly acquired home overlooking Lake Michigan, watching her twins sleep peacefully in their double stroller.
Footsteps approached quietly across the wooden deck.
Julian Vance walked out, carrying two cups of fresh coffee, handing one to Claire before taking a seat in the adjoining chair.
"The board meeting in New York went off without a hitch," Julian said, taking a sip of his coffee. "The Vanguard merger was restructured under our terms. You are officially the majority stakeholder of the largest shipping network in the Midwest."
Claire smiled, looking out at the sparkling water. "It’s strange to think how different my life was six months ago. I thought I was losing everything."
"You lost a liability disguised as a husband," Julian corrected gently, his dark eyes warm and steady as he looked at her. "What you built—what you kept fighting for—remained yours all along."
Claire turned her head, meeting his gaze. The corporate predator who terrified Wall Street was looking at her with a profound, unshakeable devotion.

"You didn't have to walk into that hospital room, Julian," she whispered.
"I didn't plan on it," Julian smiled softly, reaching across the table to take her hand. "Some investments are just too valuable to leave behind."
