Chapter 1 - The Cold Verdict

The silence in the dining room of the Moretti estate was no longer just quiet; it was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Camille Whitaker stood frozen, her eyes darting from the black titanium ring resting on the polished mahogany table to Gabriel’s face. For a fleeting second, she looked around the room, expecting someone—Marco, the guards, anyone—to laugh, to break the tension, to tell her it was a joke. But nobody moved. The guards stood like stone statues, their gaze fixed straight ahead, deliberately avoiding her eyes.

"Gabriel, stop this nonsense," Camille said, forcing a brittle laugh that cracked at the edges. She took a step toward him, her champagne silk dress rustling against the marble floor. "You’re making a scene in front of the help over a clumsy maid. Pick up your ring. We have the charity gala next week, and the press is already—"

"Marco," Gabriel interrupted, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly baritone that instantly cut her off. He didn’t look at Camille. His eyes remained fixed on Elena, who was still trembling against the sideboard, clutching her badly burned arm.

"Yes, Boss?" Marco stepped forward, his boots clicking sharply against the floor.

"Call Dr. Harrison. Tell him to get to the estate immediately with burn treatments," Gabriel ordered smoothly. "And have one of the maids escort Elena to the guest wing. She is not to touch a single chore until she is completely healed."

Elena’s head snapped up, her tear-stained face wide with shock. "M-Mr. Moretti, no, I can go home... I don’t want to cause trouble—"

"You are not trouble, Elena," Gabriel said, his tone softening just a fraction as he looked at her. "Go with Marco. Get your arm treated."

As Marco gently guided a shaking Elena out of the room, Camille’s face morphed from confusion into pure, unadulterated rage. The mask of the refined, high-society debutante shattered completely.

"Are you insane?!" Camille shrieked, slamming her manicured hands onto the table. "You are humiliating me! For a servant? She spilled tea on me! She is paid to be competent, and she failed. I gave her a lesson she won’t forget!"

Gabriel finally turned his gaze to Camille. It was a look that had made hardened cartel bosses beg for their lives. There was no anger in his eyes—only a cold, dead emptiness.

"You didn't give her a lesson, Camille," Gabriel said, stepping around the table until he stood mere inches from her. "You showed me who you really are. My father taught me many things. He taught me how to eliminate threats, how to build an empire, and how to command respect. But he also taught me that a true king never uses his power to crush those who have none. That isn't strength. That is cowardice."

"I am a Whitaker!" she hissed. "My family controls the shipping lines you use to move your legitimate cargo! You need this marriage!"

"I don't need anything," Gabriel replied calmly. "Your father needs my protection from the syndicate in South Boston. The alliance is dead. The engagement is over."

He reached out, took Camille’s hand, and with a swift, firm motion, slid the massive diamond engagement ring off her finger. He tossed it onto the table next to his titanium band.

"Pack your things," Gabriel said coldly, turning his back to her. "You have thirty minutes to leave my estate. If you are still here in thirty-one, my men will throw you out into the street. Silk dress and all."
