Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

The fallout was spectacular. The FBI raided the Whitaker mansion at dawn. Arthur Whitaker was denied bail, facing charges that would ensure he spent the rest of his natural life behind bars. Camille, stripped of her wealth, her status, and her dignity, was left with nothing, her name permanently dragged through the mud of public scandal.
The Valenti family, terrified of Gabriel's wrath after Victor’s capture, formally surrendered all claims to the northern territories, solidifying the Moretti syndicate as the undisputed powerhouse of the East Coast.
But back at the estate, Gabriel didn't care about the territory or the money. He sprinted up the stairs to the guest wing, kicking open the door to Elena’s room.
Elena was sitting on the bed, holding a pillow tightly to her chest. When she saw Gabriel—his suit slightly disheveled, a faint smear of soot on his cheek, but completely unharmed—she let out a cry of relief and ran into his arms.
Gabriel caught her, lifting her off her feet and burying his face in her hair. He held her so tightly it was as if he were trying to merge her into his very bones.
"You're safe," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "It’s over. No one will ever hurt you again."

Elena pulled back slightly, her hands framing his face. "I was so scared I’d lose you."
"You won't lose me," Gabriel said softly, looking down at her with a warmth he had never shown another human being. "I spent my whole life fighting to survive, Elena. But with you, for the first time, I want to actually live."
