Chapter 3 - The Fragile Sanctuary

Over the next two weeks, the dynamic within the Moretti estate shifted beautifully. Elena’s burn began to heal, leaving only a faint pink scar that Dr. Harrison assured her would fade with time.
Per Gabriel’s strict orders, Elena was barred from doing any physical labor. Instead, Gabriel found excuses to spend time with her. He would invite her to join him in the vast library, asking her opinion on rare books, or have her sit with him during breakfast.
Elena discovered that behind the terrifying aura of the "Mafia Boss," Gabriel was a man of profound intellect, deep loyalty, and a dry, unexpected sense of humor. He, in turn, found solace in her genuine nature. She didn't want his money or his power; she simply cared about him.
One evening, they were sitting in the library as a thunderstorm raged outside. Elena was reading a novel, while Gabriel poured over financial ledgers.
"Gabriel?" Elena spoke up, using his first name for the first time, as he had insisted she do.
"Yes, Elena?"
"Why did you become... what you are?" she asked hesitantly. "You're so brilliant. You could have been anything. A professor, a lawyer, a legitimate businessman."
Gabriel closed his ledger and leaned back, a bittersweet smile touching his lips. "When you are born into a family like mine, choices are a luxury. My father was killed when I was twenty-four. If I hadn't taken the reins, my mother and my younger sister would have been executed by our rivals within a week. I didn't choose this life to be powerful, Elena. I chose it to keep the people I love alive."
Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She moved from her seat and sat on the sofa closer to him. "And who protects you, Gabriel?"
Gabriel looked at her, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way he hadn't felt in years. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping her cheek. "I’ve never needed anyone to protect me. Until now."
Before he could say more, the heavy oak doors of the library burst open. Marco stood there, drenched in rain, his expression grave.
"Boss, we have a problem," Marco said, his voice tight. "Arthur Whitaker just made a deal with the Valenti family. They’ve formed an alliance. They’re moving against our northern shipping routes tonight—and they’ve put a bounty on Elena’s head."
Elena gasped, her face draining of color.

Gabriel’s hand dropped from her cheek, his eyes instantly turning into shards of ice. The gentle man from a moment ago vanished, replaced by the ruthless apex predator of the Moretti syndicate.
"They think they can use her to break me," Gabriel said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "They are about to find out how wrong they are."
