Chapter 2 - A Gathering Storm

The news of the broken engagement rippled through the upper echelons of Massachusetts high society and the criminal underworld like a shockwave. By the next morning, the Whitaker family was in a state of absolute frenzy.

In the study of the grand Whitaker mansion, Arthur Whitaker slammed his glass of scotch onto his desk, glaring at his daughter. Camille sat on the leather sofa, her eyes swollen from crying, though her tears had long since turned into bitter resentment.

"Do you have any idea what you’ve done?!" Arthur roared. "The Moretti family was our shield! The moment word gets out that Gabriel has abandoned us, the Valenti family will move in on our docks. We will lose millions!"

"He chose a maid over me, Dad!" Camille screamed back. "He humiliated me! He had his guards watch me pack my bags like a thief! Are you going to let him get away with that?"

Arthur narrowed his eyes, his mind spinning. He knew Gabriel Moretti was not a man to be trifled with, but he also knew that wounded pride could be a powerful motivator. If Gabriel wouldn't marry his daughter willingly, then they would have to force his hand—or find someone else who could crush the Moretti empire.

"We need leverage," Arthur muttered, pacing the room. "Gabriel is ruthless, but he has a code. Why did he protect the girl? Is she just a maid, or is there something more?"

"She’s nothing!" Camille spat. "Just a pathetic little mouse named Elena."

"We'll see about that," Arthur whispered, a sinister plan forming in his mind.

Meanwhile, back at the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was vastly different. Dr. Harrison had treated Elena’s arm, wrapping it in soothing bandages. Gabriel had moved her to a luxurious guest suite on the second floor, far away from the servants' quarters.

Elena sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed, looking around the room in disbelief. The walls were lined with silk wallpaper, and a massive balcony overlooked the manicured gardens. She felt entirely out of place.

A soft knock rattled the door, and Gabriel walked in, carrying a small tray with a bowl of soup and a glass of water. Elena immediately tried to stand up, but Gabriel gestured for her to stay seated.

"How is the arm?" he asked, setting the tray down on the nightstand.

"It... it hurts less, thank you, Mr. Moretti," Elena whispered, keeping her eyes down. "But I shouldn't be here. The other staff... they will think—"

"Let them think what they want," Gabriel interrupted gently. He sat in the armchair opposite her, studying her face. Elena was beautiful in a way that didn't require expensive makeup or designer clothes. She had wide, expressive hazel eyes and a quiet resilience that intrigued him. "You were hurt in my home by someone who was supposed to represent this family. It is my responsibility."

"She was your fiancée," Elena said softly, finally looking up to meet his dark eyes. "You gave up everything... your alliance, your wedding... for me. Why?"

Gabriel looked out the window, his expression unreadable.

"Because a house built on cruelty will eventually collapse under its own weight," Gabriel said. "And because when I looked at you, I saw someone worth protecting. Camille was a snake. You just forced her to show her venom before it was too late."
