Chapter 4 - The House of GlassThe next morning, the sterile white lights of St. Jude Memorial’s pediatric wing felt infinitely warmer than the cold reality awaiting Grant back on land.

Lily woke up just after 8:00 AM.

Her eyelids fluttered open slowly, the heavy sedative fog clearing from her mind as she blinked against the overhead glare. The first thing she saw was the soft, familiar green of her mother’s blazer.

"Mom..." Lily whispered, her voice scratchy and dry from the breathing tube that had been removed an hour earlier.

Evelyn was instantly by her side, her face softening into an expression of pure, unconditional adoration that she rarely showed the outside world. She poured a tiny cup of water, slipping a bendable straw between Lily’s dry lips.

"I’m right here, my sweet girl," Evelyn murmured, kissing Lily’s forehead tenderly. "Just take it slow. You're safe. You're going to be okay."

"Did... did the ambulance come in time?" Lily asked, her young eyes wide with lingering fear. "I couldn't breathe, Mom. It felt like my throat was full of fire."

"Rosa heard you fall and called 911 immediately. Dr. Vance and his team took wonderful care of you," Evelyn reassured her, stroking her dark curls. "You were so brave, Lily. So incredibly brave."

"Where's Dad?"

The question hung in the quiet room like a sudden drop in temperature.

Evelyn’s expression hardened just a fraction, though she kept her voice gentle. "Your father is... handling some urgent matters out of town, darling. He won't be bothering us for a very long time."

Before Lily could ask more, the heavy door of the private room swung open.

Dr. Vance walked in, holding a fresh chart, followed closely by a hospital security guard. But it wasn't the medical staff that made Evelyn’s eyes narrow with lethal focus.

Trailing behind the security guard, disheveled, unshaven, and wearing the exact same wrinkled linen shirt from the yacht, was Grant Mercer.

He looked like a ghost of the man who had strutted out of their Greenwich mansion twenty-four hours earlier. His hair was wind-whipped, his shoes were scuffed, and the arrogant swagger that usually preceded him was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered panic.

"Lily!" Grant cried out, rushing toward the bed. "Oh, thank God, thank God you're awake! I heard... I got the hospital alerts as soon as I got back on mainland cell service—"

"Stop right there, Grant," Evelyn commanded. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried the terrifying weight of an avalanche.

Grant froze two feet from the bed, his hands raised in a pathetic, pleading gesture. "Evelyn, please. I know you're furious. I made a massive mistake going to Miami, I admit it, but when I heard about Lily... I dropped everything—"

"You dropped everything after the harbor police dragged you off my yacht in handcuffs and dropped you penniless at a public dock," Evelyn finished for him, stepping smoothly between Grant and her daughter’s bed.

Grant swallowed hard, his eyes darting anxiously toward Lily, who was staring at her father with wide, uncomprehending eyes. ရှင် "Lily, sweetie, your dad was so worried about you—"

"Don't you dare," Evelyn hissed, her hazel eyes flashing with suppressed fury. She turned to the security guard. "Escort Mr. Mercer out of this hospital immediately. If he attempts to approach my daughter or myself again, activate the restraining order filed this morning."

"Evelyn, you can't do this! I'm her father!" Grant shouted, panic breaking his voice as the security guard stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "You can't lock me out of my own family!"

"You forfeited your right to call this a family the moment you walked out of our home while our daughter lay suffocating on the kitchen floor," Evelyn said, her voice chillingly devoid of mercy. "Security, get him out of my sight."

"Evelyn! EVELYN!"

Grant’s desperate protests echoed down the sterile corridor as the guard physically steered him toward the double doors, slamming them shut behind him.

Lily looked up at her mother, her small hands clutching the edge of the blanket. "Is Dad coming back?"

May you like

Evelyn sat back down on the plastic chair, taking Lily’s small hand in hers and squeezing it reassuringly.

"No, sweetheart," Evelyn said softly, a serene, unbreakable peace settling over her features for the first time in years. "From now on, it’s just you and me. And we are going to be more than okay."
