Chapter 6 - The Grace of New BeginningsThree months later, the autumn breeze sweeping off Lake Michigan carried the crisp, clean scent of fallen leaves and new beginnings.

The courtyard of the Mercer estate in Greenwich was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. The massive wrought-iron gates stood open, welcoming a steady stream of close friends, medical professionals from St. Jude Memorial, and trusted colleagues who had stood by Evelyn and Lily through the darkest storm of their lives.

Lily, looking radiant and fully recovered with a bright pink ribbon tied in her dark hair, was laughing as she played fetch with a golden retriever puppy on the emerald lawn.

Dr. Harrison Vance stood near the patio table, holding a glass of sparkling cider as he watched Evelyn walk gracefully across the stone pavers.

"You know, Evelyn, for someone who just went through the most vicious high-society divorce in recent Chicago history, you look remarkably relaxed," Harrison noted with a warm smile.

Evelyn paused, taking a sip of her cider as she looked out over her daughter laughing in the sunshine. The heavy, suffocating weight that had shadowed her marriage for a decade was entirely gone. Her empire, her home, and most importantly, her daughter, belonged to her alone—not as tokens of a broken facade, but as pillars of an authentic, hard-won life.

"I didn't lose anything of value, Harrison," Evelyn said softly, her hazel eyes bright and clear. "I simply shed a dead weight that was dragging us both down."

"And Grant?" Harrison asked gently. "Has anyone heard from him?"

Evelyn’s expression remained neutral, neither bitter nor triumphant. "Last I heard, he was living in a modest studio apartment in Miami, working a middle-management sales job for a marine supply company—ironically enough, trying to sell parts for boats he used to own. Without my credit cards, without his stolen prestige, he’s finally forced to learn what an honest day's work actually looks like."

"Poetic justice," Harrison murmured, clinking his glass gently against hers.

"No, Doctor," Evelyn smiled, watching Lily run across the grass toward them with a joyful shout. "Just karma catching up with a man who forgot who built his world."

She knelt down as Lily threw her arms around her neck, burying her face in her mother's shoulder. Evelyn held her tight, breathing in the sweet, healthy scent of her daughter's hair, knowing with absolute certainty that the storm had finally passed, leaving behind a sky of limitless blue.
