Chapter 5 - The Dismantling of an EmpireThe offices of Mercer & Associates, located on the forty-fifth floor of a gleaming glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago, hummed with quiet, relentless efficiency.

Evelyn sat behind her massive walnut executive desk, reviewing a stack of legal documents that smelled faintly of fresh printer toner and impending doom. Across from her sat Marcus Vance, senior partner at the city's most ruthless corporate litigation firm and brother to Dr. Harrison Vance.
"Well, Evelyn, I have to hand it to you," Marcus said, adjusting his titanium-rimmed glasses as he tapped a red pen against a thick financial deposition. "In twenty-four hours, you’ve systematically dismantled Grant Mercer’s entire legal and financial footprint."
Evelyn didn't look up from the papers. "Is there any legal loophole he can exploit to contest the asset freeze?"
"None," Marcus smiled thinly. "Because every single luxury asset—from The Sovereign to his vintage Porsche collection, his country club memberships, and his personal allowances—was funded entirely through pre-marital corporate trusts and post-nuptial amendments where Grant signed away managerial control in exchange for tax shelters, he has zero legal standing. He is, for all intents and purposes, legally insolvent."
"And the Greenwich estate?"
"The deed was in your sole name before the marriage," Marcus confirmed. "Our eviction notice was formally served to his temporary hotel address this morning. By Friday, his personal belongings will be boxed up and shipped to a storage locker of his choosing—paid for through the end of the month, of course. We wouldn't want to appear entirely heartless."
Evelyn let out a quiet, cold breath. "Heartless is leaving a dying child on a kitchen floor to go yachting with an Instagram model. What I am doing is simply administrative hygiene."
Marcus chuckled, flipping to the final page of the divorce petition. "And what about alimony claims? Given his lifestyle, his attorneys might try to argue for interim support."
"On what grounds?" Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "During discovery, my forensic accountants uncovered a neat little paper trail of embezzlement from our philanthropic foundation accounts—funds Grant diverted over the last three years to pay off his gambling debts and his mistress's luxury boutique shopping sprees in Bal Harbour."
Marcus’s eyebrows shot up. "Embezzlement from a registered non-profit foundation? Good lord, Evelyn. That’s not just a civil divorce matter; that’s federal wire fraud."

"Exactly," Evelyn said, sliding the signed petition across the desk. "File the divorce papers on grounds of abandonment, reckless endangerment of a minor, and financial fraud. Let him explain to a federal judge why he was drinking Dom Pérignon in Miami while his daughter was on a ventilator."
Marcus picked up the document, his expression a mix of profound respect and cautious awe. "consider it done, Evelyn. Grant Mercer’s high-rolling days are officially history."
