Chapter 1 - The Hollow Beneath the RibsThe hospital room felt like a sensory deprivation chamber. The rhythmic beep-beep of the monitors was the only thing anchoring me to a reality I no longer wanted to inhabit. Every breath I took felt like inhaling needles, and every time I shifted, the absence—the profound, crushing silence where my daughter’s heartbeat should have been—threatened to stop my own.

Thomas stood near the door, a silhouette of a man I thought I had known for five years. He was waiting for me to say something, to forgive him, to provide him with an exit strategy from his guilt. But my mind was fixed on Sloane’s words: “She deserves to know why we were really at the lake.”

"Lydia," Thomas started, his voice a rehearsed melody of concern. "It was an accident. The ice—it wasn't supposed to give way. You have to believe me."

I didn't answer. I couldn't. I looked at the bandage on Sloane’s shoulder through the curtain, then back at Thomas. "Why were you at the lake, Thomas? And why was she with you?"

"We were—" he faltered.

"We were meeting," Sloane called out, her voice shivering with theatrical frailty. "To tell you the truth, Lydia. We were going to end it. We were going to tell you about us so we could start over."

"By driving to a frozen lake in the middle of a blizzard?" I let out a dry, hacking laugh that turned into a sob. "That’s a hell of a place for a confession, Sloane."

As the nurse hurried in to check my vitals, Thomas moved toward me, his hands reaching out to stroke my hair. I recoiled as if he were made of burning coals.

"Don't touch me," I whispered. "I want you both gone. And when I walk out of here, I want you to know one thing: I’m not just going to divorce you. I’m going to make sure you never get away with what you did to her."
