Chapter 4 - The ConfessionThomas was arrogant. He believed that because I was a woman who had lost her child, I was inherently weak. He fell for the charade.

"It was just so much pressure," he told me one night, three glasses of whiskey deep. "The company, the debts… Sloane said that if we were married, we could consolidate everything. I didn't mean to kill you, Lydia. I just… I pushed, and you fell, and I didn't know how to stop it."

He wasn't talking about the ice anymore. He was talking about the life he had built on lies.

I waited until he passed out, then I packed my bags. I didn't take clothes. I took the records, the flash drive, and my grandmother’s journals. I left the house as the sun began to bleed over the horizon. I didn't look back at the life I had built; I looked forward to the life I was going to reclaim.

I met Elias at a neutral location. We spent the night uploading the files to the district attorney’s office and the local news outlets. By morning, the story was live. The "tragic accident" at the lake was being reclassified as a double homicide attempt.
